What happens if there is no financial settlement agreed after divorce?

My solicitor said to me at the time the divorce went through that I should NOT re-marry until a settlement is reached. But I am not sure why or where this leaves me. He is FLIPPIN expensive and I dont want to get into it all with him until or unless I really have to.

ExH disappeared abroad and i have no contact. One child.

Anyone?

Have you posted this in the Legal forum, UA? It's more likely one of the lawyers will see it there.

Good luck.

Can I just ask why no settlement was agreed before the divorce? Normally all financial matters are agreed before you apply for your decree absolute.

Because my husband did a runner to thailand. He wasn't in contact for five months and then just an email to acknowledge he would agree to a divorce. the court granted it.
But i am confused as to where this leaves me financially should I die.

You've posted this in Relationships and Money Matters. Try Legal! There are a number of family lawyers there.

The short answer is that you need to see a solicitor. You can probably get a half hour consultation for free. Remarrying may mean that you will no longer be able to apply to the courts for ancillary relief (i.e. a financial settlement).
