Mayo confirms he's leaving 5Live in December...

and I feel as though someone's killed my hamster (or has told me that they're going to kill my hamster in January). I remember it when it started; it was bloody awful. But since September 11 it's become a really fantastic bit of speech radio.

The good news is that the Kermode/Mayo film reviews will be given their own one-hour slot on Friday afternoons.

I hope Mark Radcliffe replaces him. REALLY hope it's not Colin Murray or Phil Williams.

Oh, Radcliffe would make sense, FiveLive being based in Manchester and all that. Don't want Mayo to replace Chris Evans though but seems inevitable. I don't like Simon Mayo.

A woman used to have the slot, Fi Glover, I vastly preferred her to Mayo. I don't much like SM, so am kind of glad he's going (am not a Radio 2 listener, obviously).

Phil Williams has grown up A LOT, I can tolerate him now. I can't help but think of him drooling about Hollywood breasts, though.
Colin Murray makes me grind my teeth. Although he's mellowed a huge amount since his initial night stints and attempts at shock-jockery.

Whose the guy who does the graveyard shift? 1-5am, or so? He's lovely.

5live have a pretty good line up of women presenters - especially morning slots. Although the fabulous Jane Garvey left. But shellagh is cool as is victoria derbyshire. Anita whatsit is a bit annoying though.

I like peter allen. He's like my dad

Phil Williams is annoying.

I am glad they are keepingthe film reviews. He and kermode are very entertaining.

I wonder will they move richard bacon?

Oh no will miss Simon, glad film reviews are staying though.

I like Colin Murray on Fighting Talk but not when he is doing Simon's show.

Phil Williams is ok.

I love Peter Allan, think he's very funny on drive with whichever woman they put him with

Hope its not Richard Bacon, can't stand him at all.

My vote goes for Shellagh or they could coax back Jane Garvey because she's fab.

I love Peter Allen as well. May have to switch back to 5 at "drivetime"

Sorry to see Mayo go but love Richard Bacon.

I think that would be a great choice.

If they give it to Bacon, I can't possibly listen. He's so awkward and yet pleased with himself; immature, that's what he is.

Am at this news. I like all the panels and the interviews. He was bad in the beginning wasn't he? Then he just got better and better.

I'd like Garvey, but wonder whether she would want to move from Woman's Hour - it seems like she only left 5Live about two weeks ago. I like Peter Allen but he's a bit too old-dufferish for the slot I think.

I actually really like Asmah Mir (sp?) but haven't heard her in a while.

100x - do you remember the comedy surveys they used to do? It was toe-curling.

Such a shame Simon is leaving. It's bever the same when he's not there. Surely he must be getting a lot of money to move to R2 - who would want to present some music programme when he has the perfect programme which he really seems to enjoy? Looks like Mark Radcliffe is the main bet to replace him - see here. Fi Glover would be great but somehow doubt that she wants full time. Matthew Bannister would be good. Colin Paterson would be the choice from hell.

I love Colin Murray, Phil Williams and Richard Bacon!!!

Not so keen on Mark Radcliffe but don't dislike him too much either.

Don't mind any of the women mentioned either but when they allowed Fiaona Phillips to present for a week I was and she was BAD.

they can't make it Colin Murray. It's taken me this long to get used to him on Fighting Talk. He talks so fast it only takes one child to go MUUUUMMMEEEE and I've missed about 10 sentences.

extremelychoc - he's only going (apparently) because of R5's move to Salford in 2011 as he doesn't want to move away from London. I guess he was keeping his eye out for an opportunity (like most senior media jobs, they have to wait for others to move around)and one came up and he took it. It's a shame really. I feel he's so well suited to R5. R2 just seems a bit, I don't know, OLD for him iyswim.

Thanks for explanation fox - I had heard about his reluctance to leave London but read somewhere else that he was keen to move back to music radio which just seems really bizarre. I wonder which other presenters they will lose? I too agree that Colin Murray would not be right for this slot. I think Phil Williams has improved a lot but still a bit bloky. I thought Richard Bacon would be the favourite as he seems to have been no. 1 stand-in for Simon. I think Bacon has improved but, like Colin Murray, too self-obsessed.

Not Richard Bacon. He needs to grow up and stop wittering.

I'm very that Simon Mayo's going. He's such a good interviewer - intelligent, patient, understated and does his homework.
The only thing I wouldn't miss is him and Mark Kermode ( can't stand him) but I gather that's all that's staying!

Sorry Mayo is going in some ways but also he can be so irritating at times.
Never was a man more deluded about how unamusing he is. He just isn't funny is he, and he's least funny when he thinks he's being hilarious. And his teasing of celebrities and his false mateyness "So you haven't got a job after this film wraps then have you?" isn't appropriate it's just rude.

BUT he is good and I love the books and adore the film slot (for kermode though, not for mayo) so I'm pleased that's going to stay on 5.

I want Radcliffe all the way! Please let it be him, he's so lovely.
Phil Williams sounds like local radio to me.
Kevin Bacon best at night really, still a bit lightweight some how, can't forget he presented Blue Peter.
Colin Murray - too pleased with himself but good, still not right for the p.m.
Fiona wotsit who did a dep for Mayo made me want to run under a bus - she was just abominable.
5 live has enough women anyway, they should go for the best in the pm.

NOOOOOOOOooooooo to Richard Bacon.

He is actually Alan Patridge. I sometimes listen to him just for the laugh. One of my favourite moments was when, during the MPs expenses scandal, he persisted in declaring 'Come on - we all fiddle our expenses!.'

I will miss Simon Mayo. He was smug and unfunny, but his 'serious issue' interviews were the best on the radio (any station.)

I liked Fi Glover - she left because Victoria Derbyshire ran off with her husband of two months. But she has remarried, so maybe that's all water under the bridge.

Thanks for the link nettie. Can't see myself listening in the afternoons nown- so many better people around than Richard Bacon. Thank goodness I don't listen in the evenings anyway as Tony Livesey is dire.
