sanding floors how much does it cost professionally?

has anyone used a professional to sand a wooden floor? We need to get this done and need to get someone to do it while we're away, as dust will aggravate dd's asthma. Anyone have any idea on cost? Thanks!

We are getting ours done with this man, who lists his prices on his website. Maybe this would help? For what it's worth, we got 4 quotes, and his came in the mid range between cheapest and most expensive, so I'm guessing his prices are middling for South London.

I was quoted £400 for a 4m x 7m room including varnish. He hadn't seen the room and was going on my description.

Have decided in the end we're going with real wood which I've just ordered for £22.50 a square meter and need to get someone to fit.

We had ours done just before Xmas - cost around £750 for 2 medium sized rooms and hall downstairs. They used one of those sanders that collects all the dust so there was very little mess which was great as we'd previously done floors ourselves with a hired machine and the dust was unbelievable. We only had the one quote as I couldn't find anyone else who did it!

thanks you guys, this is so helpful - wish we could diy but it'll make her asthma so bad which is of course why we need wooden floors in the first place!

If you can afford it, consider getting a laminate/engineered/solid wood floor laid instead of getting the boards sanded. Unless you spend ages filling in the gaps between them, having floorboards can actually make the room quite dusty as the areas underneath the boards are usually full of dust and mess, which creeps up through the gaps or gets blown about when you hoover (especially if they have a wider gap like ours had). It's also more difficult to keep them clean, as you have to be careful when mopping. I spent ages sanding and varnishing all the boards in our old house, and then after a couple of months ended up covering them over with carpet because every time I cleaned the bedroom floor, water dripped through and marked the lounge ceiling!

By the time you've paid for someone to sand and varnish, you'll probably break even getting something laid instead, and it'd be less hassle as it could be completed in a day.

mrsl123 good advice but these existing parquet floors found when we ripped up hideous carpets (just downstairs). they are hard to keep clean by the back door because of dog/herds of children but in hall and sitting room they look quite nice so i'd like to restore them if poss. otherwise my husband wants carpets and i'm not keen as i hate hoovering!
