Those of you with Loft Conversions

Does the floor shake when you walk across it? Ours springs up and down really badly. is this normal?

Oooh, no, can't say I have noticed.
We had the loft converted our victorian property (not sure if that is relevant, different build-style re floor joists perhaps hence why i mention it) over 5 years ago.
We had floorboards laid across the original joists. Have not noticed any springy-ness.

it shouldn't do that. Did YOU have it done? Wondering if its been done properly, with building regs - when ew had ours done in old house, we had to reinforce the joists (or something) before putting floor down.

How badly is badly?

If it has been done to building REgs then it will have taken into account the maximum allowable movements stated in the relevant British standard.

tbh though, if it was moving more than it should be you would probably be seeing some amount of damage to the ceiling surface below, in the way of cracks appearing.

I'm a structural engineer and would recommend that you either go back to the company that did it (if it was you that had it done, although if that's the case you should have copies of all the relevant local authority paperwork) or if not, seek the services of a structural engineer or building surveyor to get a professional opinion.

ceiling joists usually need some sort of reinforcement before a floor can be laid on them.

hope you had a good Crimbo, and that babyG (or perhaps toddlerG now!) is doing well. bumble is walking and climbing and into bloody everything; rarely manage the pooter in the day now as I'm too busy chasing after him!

Yeah it was great thanks! BabyG is a lazy little beast re walking = he's crawling and pulling himself up but he's still too wobbly to support his vast weight himself!

Thanks ladies, my dh is an engineer and says it would ahve been built to recommendations, so will be fine, but it just seems to bounce around so much (perhaps its just me needing to lose a stone)
