Oh my goodness, I'm going to build a house (well two houses actually)

I've always wanted to but the time and location have never been right, and now we've bought a plot of land and will be building. Shock The plot cost more than we wanted and is bigger than we need so we will be building a house to sell and our own one to live in. It's both incredibly exciting and incredibly scary.

Yay - how exciting, I've always wanted to do that too but I live in London where plot prices are shocking Envy.

I lived in London for 20 years, the only time I ever heard of anyone self-building there was on TV, and the plot was always impossibly tiny.

This is going to be loooong. We will build the smaller house, move into that and sell our current house and then build the dream home. It'll be over a year before the first move, and probably another 18 months (optimistically) before we're into the final house.

Congratulations - keep us posted. How does that work with respect to capital gains tax?

We shouldn't have to pay any capital gains because we will have lived in the smaller house before selling it, so it will count as our home not as an investment. I have to check, but I think in Ireland you have to live in a house for a year to avoid capital gains, but we will definitely be in it for at least that long so it shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for the congrats, and especially thanks for not telling me I'm must be mad (like my Mum did Hmm ).

My architect said he would like to see pictures of ideas that I like. I'm not sure he meant quite as many as I'm sending him. 😄 Eight pictures just of garage doors might be overkill.
