Paying for works...?

Dear All,
Sorry to bother you with such a small question. I just asked a builder for work which was costed at around 3000. He texted on Thursday to say he had finished the work, which is in a rental property. I called him back on Friday afternoon and he said he wanted payment immediately. He has not submitted an invoice and had not told me earlier that he wanted to be paid immediately on completion (most builders submit the invoice and then I pay). I haven't seen the work yet, and I've contacted the tenants to see if it's done to their satisfaction (I'm sure it's good, he's a good workman) but they haven't got back to me yet.
The problem is that I am now away for ten days, and don't have computer banking. I offered to give him the money I could get out of the cashpoint before I go (300 pounds) but he needed more. I've called two relatives to see if they can wire some money to pay him now, but neither can. I feel bad that I can't produce the money immediately - but can I ask if I've actually done anything wrong in the order of business etc by doing this? I'm just a bit back footed as I didn't know when the work would finish or that he would expect immediate payment or that he would expect this payment without submitting an invoice first.
I want to feel less bad!
Can I?

I wouldn't worry that much ,, I'm sure all is fine and he will get his money cos he done a good job ,,,,must had been quite a large job 3 k,,perhaps he should give fair warning to give you a chance to get money together ,, you shouldn't have that laying about ,, always inspect the work before paying ,, I always insist my customers inspect my work first ,, I want to make sure there happy ,,
