Reassurance & advice re:potential boiler problem

My usual evening tv watching has just been interrupted by really loud clanging/banging noise in roof. Just about light enough outside so saw water spurting out of what looks like an overflow by the front door. Noise & water have stopped now & I've switched off the boiler as it had a red light & I'll be worrying about it all night.... Should I ring British Gas or find a local heating engineer first thing? Has something similar happened to anyone? Any advice welcome!

unless you have a British Gas service contract...start in the morning with the Gas Safe people, perhaps call them for advice and then find a local tradesman.

you can see in the boiler manual what the red light means (but don't switch the boiler back on with that big a leak!). Should be online if you don't have it.

Is the pressure guage st 0. If it is top up the pressure to one bar, and what boiler is it?

Ditto Toda's advice. Certainly no way an expert but the first thing I'd check is the water pressure. Should be easy to top this back up if required. How old is your boiler? When was it last serviced?

is this "overflow" coming through the wall behind the boiler? And is it a 15mm copper pipe bent back on itself so it squirts at the wall? Or is it white plastic pipe?

Has your boiler got a pressure gauge? What does it read?
