I have a typical 2 up 2 down victorian terrace with a two storey extension for the kitchen downstairs and bathroom upstairs. The staircase is steep and narrow and at the top of the stairs, on the left, is the door to the bathroom. Now here is the problem, the door to the bathroom opens inwards and if you don't look down you will fall into the bathroom!
The previous owner installed a step but it is about 20cm lower than the landing and is half the width of the door. I haven't measured the distance between bathroom floor and landing but it must be at least 40cm. My concern is that I'll take a trip to the bathroom one night and end up on a trip to A&E!
I'm sure usually at the top of the stairs there should be a smaller landing which is level with the bathroom floor and then a step up to the main landing which leads to the bedrooms.
Is this something that can be fixed and is it likely to be costly?
