What do I do with this part of the house ? Am stumped !

We are starting to renovate our attic and one of the rooms has a low narrow alcove (with - helpfully - a fireplace at the end) in it. There is a photo of it on my profile.

It's too deep to make it a wardrobe and too low to walk into it (approx 8 ft long, 5 ft high at its highest and 7 ft wide) and I really don't know what to do with it. Would welcome any inspiration from someone more creative than me !

If I had a house with plenty of storage otherwise, I'd be tempted to make it a little cosy hideaway for my children.

Well that's just weird! Has there been a previous extension which has cut the ceiling height? (sorry, nosy!).

A friend has converted a space like this into a kind of den for her DS. Otherwise I can only suggest you put a door on it and use it to store suitcases etc.

As soon as I saw the picture I thought - I would make that a fab den for DD!

Great minds think alike!

If you didn't want to do that you could perhaps make a reading den for yourself, get a low bench or just some cushions, line the wall with books and hide from your children the world.

I love quirky bits like that in a house, you have to do something with it!

Something like this if you have small children?

I love that idea of the play den ! They're a bit little to be up there alone at the moment (DS1 3 and DS2 7 months) but I know they will be drawn to that room like bees to honey when they realize it's there (have great memories of mooching about in my granny's attic for hours as a kid) so why not make it into something for them ? Might have to block off the fireplace though in case they start looking for Santa. Thanks everyone.

fresh - no, it's an old house and has a few quirks ! According to the 1911 census a maid lived in this room (poor thing). As the only maid in this house is me Grin the play den is a better option...

BTW the crap in the photo was the previous owner's, not mine Grin. I have a hatred of small porcelain figurines (shudder)...
