DS (11) and I are in the planning stage for his new bedroom. Which is the master bedroom cos there are constantly groups of mates here and so it is to be a bed/hang out room.

He has thrown a spanner in the works by asking for this on one wall.

Woild it work if I painted the rest of the room pale blue as planned ? Should I painted the edges of wall with the hacking great big picture on it dark blue to "blend"?

I think the furinture chosen (ikea pale wood bunk bed, white ikea open storage things, expedit) will still be ok, but am now stumped on decorative touches.

Cos not least am worried that with such a busy wall any extra decoration would be a bit much.

His existing ikea bedding will not match either. Maybe better to go for something real plain, like a white duvet cover?

Does anybody have any ideas about the dos and don'ts of decorating a room with a mahooosive piccie on one wall?

fastweb I can't help at all, but wanted to see how people responded because I have the same problem (not the same picture) with my 10 yr old

I love it! Pale blue sounds fine, especially if it is the pale blue of the sky in te picture. Plain navy bedcovers would work too.

I think the idea is to paper an entire wall with it, so that there is no blending.
pale blue and navy bed linen will look fine. could you dye his existing bed linen?
Will it not always look a bit of a mess, with the friends and all?

I will have to do some blending on the mahooosive piccie wall, cos the wall is a bit bigger than the pic.

Glad the original furniture/wall colour combo comes accross as workable, don't think I could bear to start again from scratch trying to plan the damn room.

I think they will make a huge mess, so thought about the 'natural fibers' basket things that you can shove expedit, and maybe priming then painting some plastic ones too, so I can hide stuff.

He has just announced he wants beanbags.

Why did I ever suggest a new bedroom/hangout redesign in the first place?

It's going to cost a bomb at this rate, since I now need a wall paper expert included in the budget. There is no way I am going to be able to put that thing up cos it needs such precision.

So I think I'll just buy those outsized cushions from IKEA and tell them to immagine they are beanbags in the name of economy.

Would it look tatty and out of place if I stuck to one of those cheap paper lantern type lightshades?

I guess it might be better not to try and plan in decorative bits and bobs and just let them accumulate over time as nice stuff is seen and saved up for.

Except the lava lamp. Cos he has set his heart on one so I'll get him little one for xmas.

It was so much easier when he was small didn't have an opinion as to what his boycave should look like Grin

Dying his existing bedding is a really good idea actually.

Nice solid plain dark blue should do the trick.
