We used to live open plan, a good extractor fan was the key, somethings we just avoided cooking. An outside electric bbq would have been nice if we'd had the space. I think you just get used to it.

We're open-plan for the living areas, in a sort of C shape round the stairs - as greenlegs says, an efficient extractor fan is your main ally. If possible, get one fitted that goes directly to the outside rather than the kind that recirculates the air. And remember to turn it on when you start cooking! I often realise I need it halfway through cooking something. Smile Not sure how that goes with the wheelchair - you'd need to get a control for it where you can reach easily, not up high on the extractor itself which I think is the norm.

Our "kitchen" has vinyl floor, then the dining area and study area have carpet, then there's a different carpet in the lounge - but I'd guess a single carpet apart from the kitchen would be more practical with wheels. You can use things like big double-sided shelf units to make dividers between different areas if you have no walls at all. I think some division into sections helps to make it more practical rather than a single space.
