shelving/cupboards in alcoves. Anyone had it done?

I stayed in a lovely holiday home last year that had some fantabulous shelving/cupboard wizardry in the alcove space of the rooms, I quite fancy it in my house here.

Anyone have any advice/ideas on price etc? Im in the west midlands.

OOOh...I've just learnt how to make Alcove shelves at college if you want a step by step guide on how to do it! Havent got to the cupboards yet but that will come when I've made the bedside table.

This is very common in London I think. We had it done in our Edwardian house - it was very pricey and I am sure it could have been done cheaper in fact. It looked lovely though Grin

We used a company called Conquest, and this was about 4.5 years ago

My (not very DIY-ey) DH built shelves into the alcove at our last house. He liked it so much, he's repeated it twice over in this one! Great use of space, and easy to do (must be! Grin ).

Yes, we've done this in two rooms. It's a brilliant way of getting extra storage space. The first lot was a set of 3 shelves and 1 cupboard in each alcove and I think we paid about 600 GBP about 7 years ago. The second set we had done earlier this year and is a set of 3 shelves each side, with a 'desk' one side and 'dressing' table the other side, lower down. We paid about 300 GBP iirc. Both times we used local joiners rather than cabinet makers or specialist carpenters - the quotes from them were astronomical!

Thanks for replying!!

there is no way DP could do it. He is beyond useless at DIY.

Daisy- I dont suppose your joiner was midlands based was he?

I have seen some astronomical prices on the web- would really like to get both alcoves done for under £600. Thanks again for the advice- really helpful
