What's the point of a bed runner

I'm not one for beds covered in pillows etc. It just seems like a faff when it's time to go to bed.

I'm kitting out our spare room that will be used by the babysitters my parents. I've seen linen packs that include runner but they are only 52cm wide - what is the point?

I'd like to know the answers to these two mysteries too.

Ha, ha, not just me then! I bought the linen today and brought proper throw for the bed rather than a naff runner. I was wondering in my un-coolness whether I was missing the point of runners.

I've not idea. I saw them on the bed linen bit of the John Lewis website last week and thought I had strayed into dining table stuff (where I don't like them either).

Are you supposed to roll them up and put them away before bed? Or do they stay poised over your ankles all night?
