Hi,

Not sure if this kind of Topic have been discussed earlier. We are from India and My son is of age 4.5. We have moved into UK during the month of June by which the school admissions are completed. We have applied to the Council and my son is now in waiting list (number 2) on the preferred school.
Can someone advise me on the following questions.

  1. Being in waiting list number 2, does that guarantee an admission?
  2. When will the council let us know for sure that we have secured an admission?
  3. Will it be possible to ask the council for a school that have available seats now? If so, applying for that, will it risk the current admission? (The current school we have applied is very near to our home)

I am too worried since I have pulled out my son from a Good school in India .

Please share your thoughts.

Agree with Dilemma but would be stronger on point 3 - accepting a place at another school will not affect your place on the waiting list for your preferred school. The council would be breaking the Admissions Code if it does.

And you may be offered a place at your preferred school before September. The results of admissions appeals are being published about now, so some parents will be turning down school places or leaving waiting lists if they have obtained a place in another school.

Do you how many children enter Reception each year at your preferred school? If it is 90 then there would be more chance of a couple of children leaving or not starting school than if it were 30.

The School do have 90 headcount. Just checked with the LEA asking for other available schools for which they responded that all the schools are heavily subscribed. . So I think unfortunately we need to press on and keep waiting for some good news.

If there is another school you like, then I would apply. It can't do any harm, and you can't tell which schools parents are going to move children from first. However with an intake of 90 you have a good chance of getting a place as you are 2nd on the waiting list.

You can go on the waiting list for more than one school. If I were in your position I would put my name down for any local schools which you would be happy to send your son to. If your son is 4.5 now, you do not legally have to send him until the term after he turns 5, which would be either Christmas or Easter in your case. You could wait and see which places appear in that time. There is a good chance though that a place may come up at your preferred school by Sept. It only takes a couple of people to drop out because they are going to private schools and haven't said yet, or they move house and suddenly you're in! Good luck.

You can go on the waiting list for as many schools as you want. If the council are saying that all schools are full up you should ask them what they plan to do about finding a place for your child. They have to have a "Fair Access Protocol" which says (amongst other things) how they will go about finding a place for a child who moves into the area when there is a shortage of places at the local schools. It sounds like you are in that situation. Don't let them fob you off. They HAVE to find a place for your child.
