Deferring school place.

I'll try to keep this simple!
We are re-locating. My DS is 4 (5 in March). He attends school part time, due to start full time in September.
I applied for a school place where we are moving to. It was a late application and we are (obviously) out of the catchment area (200 miles out of!). I called the local LEA a few weeks ago to see what his chances were. I was told the schools that we had applied for were full and the only one they could offer was quite a way from where we will be living. So we decided to postpone the move until next year and try to secure a place once there.
This morning I had a letter to say he has been offered a place at our second choice school, which is a fantastic school. Obviously we are over the moon, but it's going to be a massive struggle to move before September.

Can primary schools defer places until the following term? As in, could we ask that he starts the term after Christmas? I have been trying to find out all day, but can't get through to anybody at the LEA!!

It depends on how the LA and the school work. In many instances providing that your child is not yet 5, which he will not be, then you can defer. But make sure you get that advice in writing from the LA before you commit.
