Question re Scottish Primary Schools

thursdaysgirlhasfartogo · 30/03/2010 20:23

Currently living in England but will be moving to Scotland in the summer.

DD1 is currently in Reception but I can't seem to find an equivalent in the Scottish school system.

Does Reception (England) = Primary 1 or Primary 2 (Scotland)?

Thanks

Neither - we don't do reception. When is your daughters birthday? That will dictate what primary year she starts.

In Scotland children start school in P1, but they are on average older than children starting school in England (4.5-5.5)

She is 5 in April so I guess she will join Primary 1?

Reception = Primary 1.

That is right Thursdaysgirl she would start P1.

Suzi it isn't really. I have known children in Reception move to Scotland and be too young for P1.

I'm in scotland - reception does kinda = primary 1 however the cut of for birthdays and starting is totally different, its the end of February, so my dd just turned 6 in P1 in March, however if her bday had been Feb she would have gone a year earlier. With your dd turning 5 in April come August this year with new intake starting she would probably be repeating a lot In P1 but i can't see them putting her up to P2 as she would be far too young.

Yes that is right, she will start Primary 1 in August.

5yo in april means she'll go into Primary 1 after the summer.

we have pre-school nurseries.

TBH I don't really mind her repeating a year due to problems she has experienced at current school.

I'm not relishing the thought of going through all those "first day at school" again!

Well no, but that's because children in England start school when they're between the ages of 4 and 5 and in Scotland they're between 4.5 and 5.5, so I think in England Reception Year is more of a gentle introduction, maybe more equivilent to the last year of nursery but not quite.

There's not an exact match, that's true.

I think Thursdaygirl that P1 is different and moves on much quicker than Reception - from threads on here really about what they do and don't do in the respective classes.

It will be great for her confidence anyway and that may help with any other problems.

My DD2 is in P1 at the moment so if you have specific questions on where they are at and what they have covered so far in the school year feel free to ask.

Thanks for all replys.

I think it will be easier for her to adjust to a new school in P1 as she won't be the new girl.

i am already trying to eradicate her (slight) Yorkshire accent and replace it with a nice broad Ayrshire one!

Thanks again x
