Not my petition. I would have said "with at least 5 years teaching experience including senior leadership". But you get the gist!

No! Estelle Morris was a teacher and couldn't handle the pressure of the job. The qualities needed in an education secretary are different to a teacher.

Nicky Morgan attended a selective private girls school. She has no idea of how the other half lives.

However there needs to be a way of ensuring that teachers do decide policy rather than being at the mercy of politicans. Ben Goldacre, a statistican advocates evidence based practice.

He doesn't want to tell teachers how to run schools, but teach them how to do high level statistics. If teachers are allowed to do educational research then they can be empowered to make independent informed decisions about what works. Teachers can also learn from research done by other teachers.

I feel that the secretary of education needs a more hands off approach. The secreatary of health does not tell doctors to treat patients.
