Oxford Reading Tree- Why is Wilf wearing a freaking plastic bag on his foot in Land of the Dinosaurs??

Title says it all really- he's stomping about in prehistory with a bloody plastic bag on his foot. Does anybody know?

Ah - just asked ds and he remembers! That book is the second of a two parter. In the first book he lost his shoe in a lake. They put a bag on his foot to keep it dry. Can't remember what the first book is called though ..

If its the fact that plastic bags weren't available in the prehistoric era you struggling with, that story is part if the magic key stories were the key transports them back in time. So if he was wearing the bag when the key started to glow then it would be transported with him.

God, dd2 loved The Land Of The Dinosaurs (I think because she had learnt it off by heart!)

We are stuck in the world of Floppy Did This with ds - I yearn for the excitement of The Magic Key days.

Ah super, I knew you ladies would know! Thank you. So it's actually funny that he loses the second one as well (I bet his mum won't believe how either...).


It was seriously distracting me earlier when I should have been listening to DD3 reading. The plastic bag was just a bit fly on the ointment without knowing about "The Outing". Presumably they had only just got back before being whisked away on the magic key adventure and he hadn't had time to go home and confess fetch some fresh shoes.

Ooh my dd just had the The Storm where they find a key under a tree. I was oh the magic key that is where it came from and told DS as we never got this reading book with him. Excitement for a few moments

But duchesse, don't take it TOO seriously - it's not REAL, you know!

The one I like (may be 'Spots' but not sure) is when Dad does the shopping, has a full trolley load and is in the '10 items only' queue, that says 'Cash Only' , and he has his card or cheque book ready; some good facial expressions from the Staff (sorry, 'Colleagues'!).

As a TA I first read these in 1993, and like Enid Blyton books et al, society has moved on and many things in books can be a bit 'iffy' nowadays.

I remember those awful books. How on earth they got to be so mainstream I haven't a clue. They bored the life out of DD who is a good reader. The names of the characters are beyond belief and the stories are indescribably pathetic.

On the plus side DD hated them so much we agreed with teacher that once she got to a certain level she could be a free reader - so in a way the Biff, Chip et al stories were the best motivation ever.

I won't miss them. Ever.
