Hi, iam worry about my child reports my child current report is s&l 2a reading 2a writing 2b maths2a science 3c plz tell me and explain me how's report is good or average thanks

What year is your child in?

If your child is in reception that's astonishingly good. If your child is in year 6 it is astonishingly bad. Age of child and what year they are in would help.

Is English his second language?

By the end of y4 he would ideally be at 3b, one whole level up from end y2 when he would ideally have been 2b.

So he appears to be a year or so off the pace.

Have you had previous reports? What were the levels then?

Does he get any extra support at school?

(However, if English is a second language which he does not hear much of at home and only really started English in reception, or if he only moved to this country more recently then it's understandable.)

Thy should move 2 sublevels a year in ks2.

Therefore a 2b in year 2 would equate to 3a by the end of year 4 (that's where our children are expected to be)

Tbh I'd be looking more at progress. Have they told you were he started in year 4?

The levels go from lowest up:
1c
1b
1a
2c
2b
2a

Etc. each letter describes a 'sub level' and the number is the national curriculum level. He should ideally be a 4b at the end of year 6

Ah. I'd say he's doing fine for someone with English as an additional language.

In that case I'd definitely ask for his start of year levels so you can get an idea of progress

My little one is in y4.

Basic things to do:

• talk to him in English / ensure someone does this out of school. The more exposure he gets the better.
• listen to him read, every day. If you are yourself unsure of pronunciation of words or what they mean try to get help. If you need help with phonics then ask school if they can direct you to some help.
• practice maths times tables, and general mental maths
• ask if they have a guidance leaflet on how they teach maths.

He is doing ok for an English as second language pupil. I would see if you can get a meeting with his teacher to discuss his progress and any areas you can help him with at home.

He is doing fine. At that level I would expect extra help with reading, which he is getting. But also maybe some help with his maths. Does the teacher mention any other issues such as fidgeting, lack of focus, easily distracted? If none of those then he probably just needs to work on his English a bit more. If there are no other issues involved, children who are bilingual can seem to lag a bit at this age but they do benefit long term from speaking two languages.
