Any Reception teachers around? What do you make of this timetable?

Just wondered what your opinions are on this daily routine:

9am register

• 9.15 numeracy on carpet, whole class
  

Group work and choosing till 10am
Back on carpet for 10am, chn must sit in silence on carpet while taught/practise something

Children then choose for 10 mins before letters and sounds as whole class 10/15 mins

After play back on carpet for whole class literacy before groups. Children get 30mins CIL if they are not doing literacy group. Then 15 min story before lunch.

Feels like too much carpet time, especially when the class are chatty as they've sat so much!

A lot of carpet time and not long enough for children to develop meaningful CL. 10 mins choosing are they serious?

Sounds like literacy and numeracy hour really. This class teacher may be on her own in this class with 30, and whole group teaching may be a way of working effectively.. If she is group working then she will just be working with one group, the others will be getting on on their own, which at 4/5 is a bit Unless you are the teacher here, you don't know they are chatty.

This sounds like primary organisation really to be fair. There is a lot of carpet time in Primary. My DC loved going on to senior school and finding carpet time was no more.

Not a teacher, but I think this much carpet time at this stage in reception is quite normal.

It certainly isn't Lynette and doesn't comply with the curriculum guidance.

That's good to know! I thought DD had gone to some amazing reception class where carpet time was kept to a minimum, and children spent most of the day choosing their learning (or so they thought )


I know lengthy (IMO) carpet time, and forcing (even lower ability) children to record information that they barely understand in work books, just so there is "evidence" of their understanding does go on, though.

I'm glad people do not feel this is the norm! Not sure what can be done as the teacher has been doing it this way 10 years. I work in same school and have spend time in her classroom. My ds will be in the class next term and know he will not respond well to all the sitting. :(

Pray that Ofsted turn up as she isn't following the EYFS curriculum!
What does the school tell parents? Do they tell them what should happen and then do the opposite? Or is there no information?

Unless they worked or helped in school they wouldn't be aware of what goes on apart from what they are told/ see. The children do play, just not for very long!
