About to relocate and my 5yr old daughter has got a place at Manchester High School for Girls (MHSG) & Alderley Edge School for Girls (AESG) - I can't decide which may be the better as they are both independent all girls right through to 18. Can anyone give me advice please? Huge thanks!!

Did you decide?

Manchester high comes up higher in the league tables and has a wider range of different type of people (in my opinion). I know of children of both school and of children who have passed their A levels who have been there and done it. And all have done well and been very happy at both schools.

Have you looked around both the schools? Also which school is closest? I think it's nice for a 5 year old to have a school that is close to home. firstly so that they don't have to spend too long in the car each day and secondly it makes it easier to invite friends over.

We live MUCH closer to AESG. I agree that the logistics will be much simpler but I'm concerned that AESG is seen as not very academic. I'm not interested in league tables, there's more to a school than that. But I don't want her to go to a school that's considered to be not very academic as will they encourage her appropriately etc.?? I've looked around both and still confused - they both seem good. I also feel that I'm making a decision for the rest of her school life as both go through to 18 and I really think it would be great to stay all the way through!

I went to MHSG and it is a very academic school - excellence3 is expected not just a nice surprise as I believe it is at AESG.

I think that's a good idea. I don't think being at one school from 5-18 is the best, and you if you want to change, you may find you're not as well prepared for other schools' exams (makes sense I suppose, they don't want you all to leave!)

Ok, some of these are to 11, some to 13, and some are mixed and some all girls.

Wilmslow Prep I went here, and loved it. Obviously wont be quite the same now, but it's a lovely school location and buildings-wise and everyone I've spoken to seems happy there.

Pownall Hall Also in Wilmslow, quite good record I think, lots of speech and music.

Ryleys In Alderley. Has recently started taking girls. Still runs to 13, so good if you want to board afterwards. Not so sure how academic it is (it wasn't great last I heard), but no girls there are old enough to be sitting for senior schools like WGS/MHSG yet so I don't know about that.

Ladybarn Academic (if a bit pushy imo), but much larger than the others. Not so good if your DD's shy, my brother moved here from the Ryleys, and I always thought I'd have hated it.

There's also Terra Nova, but it's a bit further out (Holmes Chapel) and probably better if you want to board.

Or there's Bowden and Hale, but again, a bit too far I would think.

Hope this is helpful.

Sorry, my first paragraph was a bit curt! Hope you don't mind and understand what I meant :)

Scatterchase - I didn't think you were at all curt!! I totally agree hence the change of heart. But what a decision this is!!
