No after school club

My dd starts reception in September in a school with no after school club. There are some extra-curriculum activities but not a regular club iyswim.

I have vaguely heard of people using a child minder who picks the child up and takes them to their own home (more a very part time nanny, I guess). Her friend from down the road will also be going, and we're thinking of trying to find someone to pick both girls up and alternate whose house they stay at. My friend would need childcare 4 or 5 days a week 3.30-6pm and me for 2 days.

How would we go about finding a nanny/child minder who might be interested?

contact your local govt childrenservice. They you will give a list of all childminders in your postcode. Hope that helps.

There are a few nurseries round here with ASC that will collect from a number of primary schools and take them all to the ASC - may be worth investigating.

And check if any other local schools have an after school club and do pick ups from your school.

Even if they don't already do this they might be prepared to start if there is a group needing this.

As AuntyJ says, you local Family Information Service should be able to help. Certainly in our area, the FIS list of childminders also specifies which schools the childminder does / is willing to do school pickups from.

If there doesn't seem to be a childminder who does this for your school, then the FIS is also a good source of information about 'non school based' after school care. For the small rural school where I work, for example, there is no after school club but 2 local nurseries do before and after school care for several local schools, sending out staff to pick children up at the end of the school day. You could ask the school whether anything similar occurs there, as schools are normally pretty clued up about where their children go after school as we don't release children if we don't know where they're going to or who they're going with!
