Hi,
My dd is in P2 in scotland. He seems guite bright for his age he loves reading and enjoys using maths in every day life. loves board games and challenging himself on educational internet maths games. The problem that we have is that the school seems quite inflexible with their teaching and all the class has a set curriclum that they follow when teaching the class maths eg using money up to 20p.dd can do all the targets well before he started the year. They follow the scottish heinnem maths scheme but dont seem to differenciate learning.Anyone else having same experience the pace seems very slow!

Thanks! We have mentioned this at previous parents evenings without much success. There are 26 children in the class and other bright children who parents feel the pace is slow, but the teacher seem very reluctant to change their approach we have a parents evening coming soon any advice about how to approach the teacher with our concerns? dd does complain that work is easy lots of group discussion with snart board and then a one page task.dd is quite introverted and doesn't like to be different so is quiet in class. He reads with a group of kids in p4 and loves it the class teacher of that group says he is doing exellently and florishes in this group unafraid to give answers and love to go when the children come for him, reading is the hi-light of his week.

So all of the class are doing exactly the same maths at the same time? When dd was at primary school they had 4 different groups in her class for maths and each one was moving at a different pace. They did some "core" work and then at times each group did different work. I have no idea how this worked. Dd was on the top table (although it wasn't called that!- I think it was the circles or the triangles). Each child then sat the benchmark levels (A,B,C,D,E) at the time appropriate for them so there were kids working on level B, C & D at the same time.
