After school activities

DD has just started year 2. We have been given a list of lunchtime and after school activities. Great! Not so great is to be told there are limited places and a parent has to join a rugby scrum with a pencil to sign up DD for the clubs she is interested in. Is this normal? I have witnessed this process and trust me it is not pleasant. Is there no other way?????

unfortunately, this does sound familiar! if you are lucky, some schools will limit children to 1 or 2 clubs so everyone has a chance to get something!

No mention of any limit sadly. Just think there could be a better way to do this instead of having to arrive half an hour early to be pushed and shoved!

Slips go out and the first ones returned are first in the queue for the activity. Much fairer.

I don't like the queuing up to sign scenario because it rules out everyone who is unable to join a line at a certain time in the day.

At DD's school the sheet is sent home, again always limited places as tobe expected. You then tick the one(s) you want, send it back within the next couple of days and a few days later the children find out if they are in or not.

Slips were sent out yesterday and returned today.If demand is very high then the school tends to run sessions on two days instead of one.
Most sessions are run by out of school providers with TA support.Some are offered to certain year groups thus limiting demand as well.
At dd's school street dance is new this year (inspired by BGT no doubt) so expect demand will be high. Would imagine it will run on two days with a divide for older and younger pupils.

At dd and ds's school the children sign themselves up (subject to you sending in payment for chargable activities) if too many children sign up then the group ios either split on two with one lot doing it one half term and the other lot the other, or it is on a first come first served basis.
