"I'm dumb"

Any thoughts on this? My son is ten and yesterday I mentioned the teacher had emailed us asking if we needed anything to email her, (mainly as they are in year 6 and have a bit going on with coming tot he end of primary school) He said "It's because she things I'm dumb" I said, no it wasn't it was for everyone and he said "You don't have to try and make me feel better" I explained I wasn't I was just telling the truth. He is doing fine at school; is a bit distracted and not interested in some things but enjoys science and things like cooking. He's excited about starting secondary school. The teacher says he's very quiet at school but doing pretty well. I sometimes wonder if CBT would be good at school, I could certainly have had some help from it in the teenage years. Any thoughts or ideas; would you explore this further or leave it? Many thanks.

I have a y6 too, who struggles at school.

I would try a question such as 'what makes you say that' 'can you give some examples' and then counteract them, or say 'yes I know you find that hard but you are great at .....'

Make sure he doesn't only compare himself to the top children.

It is hard with my DD as there really is nothing she is good at at school... (we don't say that, we empathise 'we know you find it hard but ...')
