Heart palplitations in pregnancy

I am 16 weeks and have been having v tired bouts since I was pg. Think 18 hours sleep then being unable to walk across the room and having to stop during my 1/2 hour commute to sleep in the car for an hour.

Spoke to MW & GP both who said this isn't normal and GP has signed me off for 2 weeks.

BP is usually high and am on meds for it but last few times it has been low (for normal so v low for me).

I have noticed the palpitations a few times and it doesn't take much exercise (walk up stairs) and tbh I thought I was imagining it but dh took my pulse today after I walked upstairs and it was 120.

I will be seeing hospital on Tuesday and GP at the end of the week and am to get my BP taken another time too.

Googling shows that its common but tell your GP.I will be seeing hospital on Tuesday and GP at the end of the week and am to get my BP taken another time too.

So what I'm after is someone else who has experience of this and knows if I need to worry or not!

I've been having terrible palpitations and discovered it was from being anaemic. I'm on iron supplements now, but GP has also booked me in with a cardiologist just to be on the safe side.
Perhaps request an urgent blood test to check? I think thyroid problems can also cause a racing heart as well.
Hope you feel better soon!

Possibly. I'm on iron though as last time I was pg I had a transfusion so I sort of expected to be.

I have a thing for a blood test but as I havent had my pg ones yet I'm not getting it done til after the hospital in case they want some at the same time. They have to take the blood out of my hand and there are limited opportunities!

I have a tendency to get palpitations whether I am pregnant or not (fully investigated, nothing wrong). They tend to come on suddenly, when I'm at rest - either a racing heart (over 150bpm) or very irregular rhythm. So although it might feel odd to you, 120bpm after some exertion (walking upstairs) could just be that you're getting puffed out much more quickly now you're pregnant. Obviously still get it checked out though to be on the safe side.

I had this too. They put it down to low Iron count.

Unfortunately the iron supplements didn't help me. despite taking them for nearly 2 months my iron count kept dropping. They just don't work for some people!

Try taking them with vit c and no dairy for at least one hour before/after as that helps absorption.

Other than that, rest up. Sorry I can't be more help :-(

Bloods all normal except for potentially underactive thyroid but thats only borderline so shouldn't have much affect on me. BP low but stable.

Had heart racing whilst sitting & doing nothing last couple of days. GP & consultant just say rest

gracie123 I heard that if iron tablets aren't impriving levels, it might be due to B12 deficancy.

Also don't take iron/multivits with tea (not sure about coffee, don't drink that!). I have my vits with orange juice

Hi Nymphadora

I really sympathise because I get quite bad palpitations sometimes even when I'm not pregnant, I'm just prone to them. Like you, I suddenly feel my heart racing even when I'm at rest and not stressed or anything, it also skips beats and does all sorts of funny things. I have found it very very frightening at times but some very thorough investigations have revealed nothing wrong at all. The consultant cardiologist did warn me that pregnancy can make these worse or even trigger them off for some people. They are a real nuisance but very, very unlikely to be a real cause for concern. If you feel worried you could ask to have an ECG done to check your heart - they can give you a monitor that you wear for 24hrs/a week which will record the palpitations and the dr can then check if they are anything to worry about. It's not invasive, but if you're not too worried you may not want to go to all the trouble, and just use your dr's advice as an excuse to rest Hope you feel better

Ta! Am alternating between worry/ rest/daren't do anything & bored/frustrated/doing things that tire me out
