Which semester do you/did you gain the most weight?

For those who have been pregnant before (or are near end of their pregnancy) can you all pls tell me which trimester you put on the most weight? I'm in the middle of my second trimester and trying to work out whether I'm on track or putting on too much.

Do you put on most weight in the second trimester or third trimester? I've had a huge weight gain this trimester and am hoping I don't put on more than 3 or 4 kilos in the last trimester. Thank you

This is an extremely difficult question to answer as it really varies from woman to woman. The very general NHS guidelines say a woman will gain between 10-12.5 kilos in pregnancy. However, this may be more if you started off underweight or less if you started off overweight. I think if you are eating sensibly and exercising moderately, then you should be fine.

Other mums could give you their average weight gain but this will have no bearing on your particular case.

I really wouldn't stress about this too much unless you feel you are not being healthy.

I gained a stone in my first trimester then another stone over the rest of the pregnancy.

I think it is something that differs from woman to woman. A friend who was pregnant at the same time as me had terrible MS, actually lost weight in her first 20 weeks, but then gained the same amount as me in her last 20 weeks!

I put on a lot in the 1st... but don't seem to have put on so much in the 2nd... and now just entering the 3rd.

I am eating sensibly and not too much now (had to eat enormous amounts in the 1st or I just couldn't function) so I am just going to go with whatever happens now and assume that my body knows what it is doing!

I put on nothing until into the second and then it steadily went on about 1lb a week to a total of 17lb. This pregnancy is going a similar way so far (22 weeks).

1st and 2nd. Only put about 2lb on in whole 3rd trimester with first baby. Currently 31 weeks and it looks to be going exactly the same way as last time. Put on about 20lbs by 28 weeks and then level off.

Most of the books seems to say it's the opposit though. So I don't think there is any rule of thumb. For me I know it's more to do with feeling like stuffing my face for the first and second trimester, and then not having any room for food in 3rd trimester, also hormones have settled down so not as more-ish, and I realise I have to loose this weight, so start getting control of myself .

I didn't put anything on in the first 20 weeks but it's going on steadily now! I was the same in my last pregnancy and put on about 2 stone in total. everyone is different though so I guess you should really try not to compare yourself. As long as you're eating fairly healthily most of the time you won't put on excessive weight.

2nd & 3rd. As soon as the morning (noon & night) sickness wears off I become a ravanous monster! Craving fish & chips, pepsi & crunchi bars!
TBH, just enjoy your pregnancy, you will have all the time in the world to loose weight once your settled in a routine with your darling new baby, and it'll be so much easier if your BF.
I couldn't BF so found it a bit harder, but lost 3 stone when DC4 was 6-12m.
Just happen to be expecting DC5 now, so on it goes again, but I'm enjoying it and it will come off eventually.
Enjoy your pregnancy!

I am the same as SarahSyprup, I think. Lots in the 1st and 2nd trimesters then slowed massively. I gained loads in the first 23 weeks, about 1 st 11lbs (!!) but haven't really gained in last 2 weeks (am now 25 weeks). I remember that I plateaued around the same weight (11 stone!) in my last pregnancy andd the dial didn't seem to shift upwards until the last few weeks when I gained another half a stone. Hoping it will be the same this time.

I didn't gain at all in the first trimester; just reached 3rd trimester now and I've put on 20lbs. I feel like it's mostly bump (and boobs), but I hope I don't put on another 20 before the end

Nothing in the first (nausea/sickness keeps your weight in check that's for sure). A stone in the second. Now roughly a pound a week (am 32 wks).

Thanks everyone! I'm not really comparing myself, or trying to measure up to anything (so to speak), just wanted to know what I could expect for the third trimester in terms of weight gain. I know that it will vary from person to person but it's interesting & helpful for me to know others' experiences anyway. Some articles I read said that you gain most in second, some articles said you gain most in third. I am glad though that a few women who put a lot on in 1st and/or 2nd tri put on a lot less in third!

This is my first too & I am 13 weeks + 3 & have already put on nearly a stone! Feel huge but still not much of a bump, so just feel generally podgy & fat! lol! I'm hoping that the weight doesnt continue to pile on at this rate. Is interesting to hear how this has affected others ...

I have no idea! I know I put on a stone by week 26, because the midwife weighed me. She said this was fairly normal gain. But I have no inclination to weigh myself again - as long as the baby is growing, my blood pressure is OK and I'm getting all my nutrients, weight is the last thing on my mind.

Am 36 wks and have put on about eight kilos altogether over whole pregnancy. The majority of it has been in the last trimester.

I'm 18 weeks and by about 16weeks had put on 7pounds. Last couple of weeks I've stayed the same so I'm guessing I'll have a weight surge again soon.

im due in a few weeks and i think i gained the most at the end of the second trimester-beginning of 3rd, my weight gain has sort of slowed now and i dont think my bump will get much bigger!

i also have a lot of water retention in my legs and my arse has gone huge so im hoping this will all shift as soon as after giving birth.

i wouldnt worry about ur weight gain too much though it doesnt matter a huge deal it will just take a bit longer to get it all off, but with a new baby to run around after i dont think it will be too hard and i doubt u will be overly bothered!

good luck with the rest of ur pregnancy x

I am so glad I found this post as I am really panicking - I am only 5 weeks pregnant and I have put on vast amounts of weight. My jeans won't do up and my stomach is rounded and protruding. This cannot be healthy right. Real paranoia setting in.

That's probably just water retention/bloating, Hypomummy.

was overweight, so lost 1/2 stone in 1st tri, put it back on in the 2nd tri, and then put on a stone in the 3rd trimester! I was living on pizza and chocolate though

In my first pregnancy I was actually 2lbs lighter when I gave birth that when I fell pregnant due to horrendous morning sickness and being overweight to begin with. I was really worried towards the end that the baby wasn't growing. My sister who was due 6 weeks before me and is normally a size 12 put on 3 1/2 stone. But you couldn't look at us and say that she had put much more weight on than me! She lost it all quickly though! She had a 9lb 13oz baby and I had an 8lb 5oz baby!

This time I am 25 weeks and have only put on 8lbs but again still overweight, although much less so than last time. BTW I'm a size 16 so not huge but big enough.

The point is, everyone is different and you shouldn't be too worried as long as you eat sensibly. Your body stores what the baby needs, so if you put on 3 stone the baby obviously needed that!

Good luck with rest of pregnancy!
