Anyone been diagnosed with GD and using insulin? Need advice on dosage...

Hi All,

I got some great help on here this week but felt like I was hi-jacking someone else's thread, so I thought I'd add my own.

Really just need some advice on suggested insulin dosage for a meal tonight.

It is our First Wedding Anniversary today and we're going out for dinner and I would like to have a dessert. When I spoke to the Diabetic Nurse on Thursday, I told her that I was intending to have three courses and she said that 9-10 units should be sufficient. However I'm not so sure and wonder if someone else using Insulin might be able to help.

Yesterday lunchtime, we were out shopping and we decided to have a takeaway for lunch (very unusual for us...) and up to now, I've been taking between 4-7 units of insulin with a main course.

So we went into Burger King and I had a Whoppper Meal (Burger in a bun with Medium Fries and a diet coke). Beforehand I gave myself 8 units of insulin. I was really surprised that 2 hours later I took my bloods, as instructed and it showed 7.6!! (I was advised that I need to keep my levels below 7...).

So, tonight I will be having three courses, each of which may be slightly higher in carbs than anything I would have at home. So clearly, 9-10 units is not going to be enough.

Any suggestions anyone? I was thinking maybe 12 and to take it after my main meal and before dessert, so that I already have food inside me.

The diabetic clinics are not open today so I have no-one that I can ask...

Hopefully someone can help.

I'm not preg but have type 1 diabetes (and have had 2 healthy babies )

If i was going out for a meal i'd take 12 units immediately after the dessert...i guess it depends wot the dessert is..if it was sticky toffe pudding i'd prob take more like 14..of course it depends what u have for main course too, but yes at least 12!

Thanks for your post. I actually went out for the meal last night and took 12 units and my reading came back as 6.9, so just under the "Scary 7", that they've asked me to keep it under, so I was really pleased.

I am novorapid yes, and the other slow release one at night before bed.

I'm slowly getting used to it but as my levels get worse and worse each week, it's really down to guesswork as to whether I'm giving myself enough really.... The diabetics team do put the fear of God into you aswell, but I've only had one reading above 7 this week (7.6) so I hope I haven't done too much damage.
