subchorionic haematoma

Would appreciate some advice from anyone else who's experienced this. I'm 11+1 and have this is my second haematoma. The first resolved after a sudden gush of bright red blood, followed by a week of brown bleeding (sorry if tmi). Then about a week ago I started bleeding again and the sonographer found another clot near the placenta. The sonographer/nurse and sonographer/midwife were equally blase about it each time I was scanned. They said it is common and does not affect the baby. They also said that I do not need to rest and can continue with my normal routine including exercise. Now, this is completely at odds with American websites whereby women with SCHs are strongly urged to take bed rest. Who is right? At the moment, I'm aiming for somewhere in-between but I'd really like to know what I should do for the best. Forgot to mention that baby is fine so far. Last scan was at 10+5 and lo was wriggling about on the screen

I had one in my 4th pregnancy. I had the sudden gush of bright red blood at 7 weeks pg, I had to wait a week to be scanned though and at 8 weeks they said it was a heamatoma, baby was fine. I was told to go home, rest and take it easy then go back at 10 weeks for a scan. I had brown bleeding for about 3 weeks. At the 10 week scan they said everything was ok and the heamatoma was slipping down the side of the uterus. Apparently (although they never told me at 8 weeks) they were only worried about mine as it was above the baby. It was never mentioned again im my pg after 10 weeks and she is now a very stibborn 4 year old.

I had a large clot next to baby and had fortnightly scans from 6 weeks on until 12 weeks. I'm now 14 weeks and everything is fine (touch wood). At the 12 week scan they said it had shrunk to practically nothing. I had a lot of bright red bleeding to begin with but then just old blood until 10 weeks.

They never said it was subchorionic but always referred to it as the 'haematoma'. The doctor said that it was probably a good idea to take it easy but that there's nothing you can do to influence the outcome. My aunt in Spain is an Ob/gyn and she said that over there they do recommend complete rest to let your body deal with it. I just tried to keep off my feet when possible and didn't lift anything heavy (difficult with a 3 year old!) She also said that once you get to 12 weeks and have a heartbeat then you are no more at risk than someone who hasn't had a haematoma.

Best wishes, hope everything works out.

Thank you angelstar and May It's interesting that you were both advised to take it easy. That was my common sense angle on it but maybe because my clot is further from the baby they weren't really concerned.
Anyway, I appreciate your feedback

Figgis - did they tell you that you might get bright red bleeding? Just wanted to warn you incase. I had spotting twice (pink/brown). Then about 10 days later I had a sudden gush of it. It was bright red and soaked my panty liner. Even though I'd been warned I could get more bleeding it still came as a huge shock and I thought I was having a m/c

i was told it wud b normal to get more brown spotting so not to worry but if turned red to get back to them. maybe cos it was so small they wudnt expect any large amounts of red blood. thanks for warning tho. fingers crossed it will settle down!

I was told at 12 week scan to 'not be alarmed if I had a sudden bleed' . This, rather annoyingly was after my constant, completely unexplained first trimester bleeding had stopped. I never did though - you can also reabsorb the haemotoma and never actually bleed because of it.

Have had this with each of my three pregnancies. Dr always told me to carry on as normal, so after having scans at the EPU I went to work etc despite feeling concerned and a bit washed out. Always happened at 8 - 9 weeks. Ds and dd fine and this pregnancy is going well, I'm 11 weeks now.

Figgis - I was told my first haematoma was "tiny" but I still got a bright red bleed. Hope yours is reabsorbed, but at least if it does happen you'll be prepared.

I am still bleeding brown blood. How long did your bleeding persist for? This has been 3+ weeks now.

Hi ladylush,

I had a subchronic hematome - actually I had two. I bled every day from 11 weeks to 17 weeks, like a light period. It is really hard to be calm about it, but it went away eventually.

Hopefully it will stop soon. Try and relax..

I bled from 5-11 weeks and then reabsorbed a 2.5cm diameter heamotoma. I don't know if that is small or not?

If you are worried then you need to call MW, because it's really hard for us to know if its normal or not. When I went to the EPU they did say that they would expect all early bleeding to settle by 16 weeks - so you are still within that?

Thanks brett and banana There isn't a lot of info on this. Yes, I'm 12+5 so am hoping it will resolve by 16 weeks. This is my second haematoma too. M/w either didn't know much about it or didn't think it was a problem. I suppose she knew my scan was coming up and her focus was on that. Scan went well. Baby alive and wriggling (today). It is a worry but I know I have to try to relax. Easier said than done though.

Hi, I'm currently in my fifth pregnancy and I was told a week ago that I have a clot in my womb measuring about 3cm. It was my second early pregnancy scan as I had been bleeding and staining and I guess my dates were a bit off! I'm about 7weeks at the minute but I'm really worried. I have 3 beautiful children and lost a little girl at 22 weeks before. The doctors aren't saying much and each time I go for I scan I see someone different. I'm trying to think of the relevant questions to ask but its so hard when you're taken by surprise. I'd never heard of this before and assumed I was miscarrying. Like you Ladylush I wasn't advised to rest but my husband (bless him, he's so worried) went to our gp who signed me off work for a couple of weeks. I'm terrified about the possible outcome and lack of information which is how i discovered this website. Reading some of the American and Australian pages progesterone has been mentioned as a possible treatment plus complete bedrest. My next scan is tomorrow and I'm a complete wreck. Advice would be appreciated. Good luck to everyone who's expecting their own little bundle of joy soon!
