Am 38 weeks, and being taken out for V-Day meal (probably last one for five years if not longer ). Looked at the menu and the thing I fancy most is seabream with shrimps and capers. I've got this far - do you think that will be ok? Don't want to undo 9 months of saintliness re goats cheese, sushi etc.....

I would, and did, eat shellfish when pg. It's being poisoned you have to avoid so if the restaurant is clean and reputable and the shellfish are very fresh then you should be ok. As ever, it's up to you I'm afraid!

I don't think you should eat shrimps - shell fish is on the list of no-nos isn't it?

But then, at 38 weeks, it won't matter desperately I shouldn't think.

Could you ask them to leave off the shrimps?

At 38 weeks I wouldn't have worried, earlier in pg, maybe.

Cooked shellfish is completely fine. Go ahead, enjoy!

Cooked shellfish is fine - I ate them all through my first pg, and am eating them with this one. As has been mentioned - the risk is with food poisoning, so as long as they are fresh that's the main thing. Enjoy your night!

How about prawn cocktail? It's cold but the prawns have been cooked? Am really fancying some prawn cocktail. Don't care how naff and 70s it is!

I would probably be careful - in terms of where the prawns are from. I'm always very suspicious (even when not pg) of the fresh packs for example in supermarkets, because sometimes they freeze on the shelf. I'd probably eat proper frozen ones though. Prawn cocktail haha.

Prawn cocktail is fine as they have been cooked - just check they are fresh and in date, just like you would anyway!

Prawns/shrimp are absolutely fine (recommended even because they are so low in mercury) enjoy

I actually read that women that regularly eat shellfish in the third trimester are also half as likely to get postnatal depression so am pretty partial to the idea for that reason too tbh...

As long as the place is clean and the prawns well-cooked go ahead!
At this rate we wouldn't eat anything. I mean poorly washed raw vegs are probably worse or salad off those ready-made salad bars are in my view. The other things I've steered clear off are sushi (don't like anyway) and unpasteurised cheese -- although I think I actually had some throughout first trimester whilst on hols. Anything else, including soft goats' cheese if pasteurised I've had.
All an individual risk assessment I guess!!
