Worrying about movements and swollen ankles/fingers - help!

I'm 23 weeks and 3 days, and towards the end of last week I was feeling a lot of movement on and off every day. Since Saturday, it seems to have quietened down. I do still feel it but far less. I know it might be the position but how do you know? I don't want to be neurotic but I wish it would become more active again.

Also, my ankles and fingers have swollen a bit and I've had to take my rings off. I'm due to see my midwife next Monday so I can talk to her about it then. My face isn't swollen, so I guess I don't need to worry about that?

Can you tell I'm a first timer?!

I'm sure it's fine as they do have quiet days and at 23 weeks there is still room for them to be in a different place, ie kicking to the back or hidden behind your placenta if it's in front which cushions movements. Also, some amount of swelling is normal.

I would call the MW for a chat and some reassurance though rather than having a worrying wait until next Monday.

There should be a number in your notes for the community midwifery team.

And don't worry about bothering them unnecessarily as they would rather have this and it be for nothing than risk missing something that warrants attention.

I hope that helps

MsG - I don't want to worry you but swelling and reduced movements can be a sign of pre-eclampsia. Please make sure that you contact your midwife if you already haven't.

Always better to be safe than sorry x

Make sure she checks your bp, urine for protein and if these are up then liver function tests etc.

You are probably fine and dont want to scare you but pre eclampsia can come on very suddenly - I know I de;ivered 9 weeks prem just over a year ago due to it.

If you have any other symptoms - such as headache, flashing lights, shoulder pain, upper epigastric pain, dark urine, pale stools etc then please go straight to your maternity unit to get checked.

Hoe you are ok - post to let us know how you get on x

Thanks, Rascal. I have been having a few headaches but think it's from working at a computer for long times. I will let you know how I get on but might not be online for a few days so please don't worry.

Hope you and your baby were both fine. xx

Well the midwife I saw today (she isn't actually MY midwife but my acupuncturist and I get lots of advice and info from her!) looked at my fingers and ankles and said they would be far more swollen if it was preeclampsia. She just said I should keep my appointments but it's very unlikely I would have it so early. I feel much more relieved. I think I got myself into a bit of a state about it. I will mention it to my midwife on Monday though.

Baby has been kicking about a lot as well.
