Male sperm move fast but die young
Female sperm swim slowly but live longer.
This means that the male sperm will have got there and died if you have sex a while before ovulation whereas the female ones will have arrived later and survived.

Technically.

I did try and do this with dd actually, the only one out of three we planned, and she was a dd! Who knows if it worked, no way of knowing if she would have been anyway.

Isn't it to do with the female carrying chromosome swimming slower or something?

I understand the theory behind it but am still somewhat doubtful. Ds was concieved by a pre ov sperm I think.

DS was conceived on the same day I ovulated. Those boys swim fast!

I think your experience, electric, shows that this is a law of averages.

I know on what days of my cycle I conceived. Both times were 3/4 days before I was due to ovulate.

I have two dds

DS was conceived on day 14

DD was conceived on day 8

This is funny because just yesterday DH was saying that men choose the sex of the baby...well, yes, men have both sexes of babies in their sperm BUT if I give it up on the day I ovulate and we have a boy then I'd venture to say that I chose the sex of the baby.

We dtd the same day as ovulation and I have a dd, so that one bucks the trend

We tried pretty much all the time around ovulation and have three girls - so I'm not sure if that helps the debate or not

DD was conceived on 11th day of a ~30 day cycle, so it worked for us, too.

My understanding is that sperm is made up of some really strong, long lived bird sperm and some weedy bloke sperm. There are just enough extra bloke sperm to compensate for the fact that they find it harder to readh the egg on average over the month but this will mean more sucessful bloke sperm in easy times and more sucessful bird sperm in hard times. Thus making it harder to conceive increases change of a girl.

This effect is actually quite marginal though so the difference between rhe chance conceiving a girl in hard times and easy times is very small.

This is so interesting! We are ttc at the minute (first month of trying for DC1) and I ended up messing up my ov dates. We BD-ed on CD 11 and I ovulated on CD15, so if we conceive, does that mean it would be likely to be a girl? Madness!!

I really wanted a girl so I read a book on this and we had a girl. There hadn't been any girls on my dh's side for ever and ever and they were all stunned.

I am still not sure that I believe it though.

I conceived using artificial insemination 4 days before I ovulated, so was convinced because of this theory that it would be a girl. Nope, it's a boy. So theory doesn't always follow.

It worked in my case. DD conceived 2 days before ovulation, DS (due any day), conceived just after ovulation date using the ever-reliable withdrawal method of contraception . Faster swimmers, aren't they, the boys?
