Just a quickie - should I get a midwife appointment @ 40wks??

Hi ladies,

Should I expect a midwife appt at 40wks?

She saw me at 38wks, at which time I broke down in tears and begged for a c-section (v scared of birth!) and she rushed me up to see the consultant at the local hospital.

The consultant talked me out of it, but because my midwife appt ended so hurriedly we didn't discuss any future appts etc.

I'm 40wks today, and the next appt now is with the consultant in 10 days time, which means I'll have gone 3 1/2 wks without being checked. I was sure we were meant to be checked every 2 wks in the last trimester??

(I've tried getting hold of mwife btw - answermachine is always on!!)

Thanks

Chances are you are fine. However I would make an appointment to see her, just so she can check position, dip your urine and take you bp.

Not long to go now! Good luck xx

I think you see them at 41weeks if you get that far. I am sure the birth will be wost in your head ...I have had 2 natural and 1 CS and the cs was the worst honestly.

My MW told me you do get a 40 week appt with your first baby but not with subsequent ones. I was told to ring the maternity ward when it was time. I'm sure if you make an appt she will see you which will help to reassure you.

Thanks, I don't feel I particularly need to see her, but better safe than sorry! My DD arrived at 38wks so haven't got this far before.

I think it differs depending which area you live in too!

Will have to see if she gets back to me - I left a voicemail last Thurs basically saying do I need an appt or not, but she's not called back..

thanks again

Claire

I can't believe noone is checking BP etc at this stage - at my hospital you are reviewed weekly at this stage, so even if you just pop into your GP I would have someone give you the once over!

With my 2nd baby the MW never listened to the hearbeat in the few appts I had with her. Was actually shocked at how you are literally on your own with subsequent pregnancies even though I had MC inbetween my 2 DD's.

I am 40 weeks with my second DC and I had a 38 week MW appointment at which she booked me in for a sweep with her at 41 weeks if nothing has happened by then.

jivegirl - yes you should make an appointment asap - I was checked every two days once I went over my due date, to check that the baby was still 'happy', and to check my BP.

You should phone back.

I can't believe the differences depending where you live! I wonder if there's some national guidance somewhere.. will go and google

I have just had a 36 week appointment and because they had no appointments left at 38 weeks will not be seen until 39 weeks. A bit eek as it's my first but as long as the pregnancy has been healthy I guess they don't worry and presume you will ring them if something does go wrong.
Even if it's just an answermachine, if you are worried leave a message and they will get back to you.

I had one at 39+5 as my 40 weeks fell on a sunday. Saying that i was in labour at my last opt with the midwif and DS came along shortly after.
Good luck with the birth, not long to wait now but if you want peice of mind i would go see your MW.

My surgery checks me weekly at 38, 39 and 40 weeks. Then I am at hospital for a post-due check. Obviously all are difference but I'd say get checked if you want to. I'm rather happy to be checked weekly (number 1 baby).

Finally managed to track down the midwife - the answer is YES, I should be seen at 40wks (apparently we should be checked every 2 wks). So I am booked in for a check tomorrow.

Thanks everyone!

Claire
