Reduction in movements - How much is normal?

I am 32+5 and this morning I can't feel baby at all. I have poked and prodded but nothing. He was incredibly lively yesterday evening, more so than he's ever been, it felt like he was turning somersaults! But now I am really concerned. I know some reduction in movements is normal but to what extent? I think I will head off to the hosital in a bit just for some reassurance

have you tried drinking a sweet, cold drink and lying on your side for 30mins? That's the recommendation...if nothing after that, get an emergency appointment at the GP/midwife to check heartbeat. chances are it's sleeping after the lively evening...

Drink some iced water or scoff some ice cream then sit and do nothing for ages - tht usually works for me. Mars bars too give them a sugar rush.

I'm 38 wks and baby did not stop all night last night, but I've felt nothing this morning. Eventually babies fall into a sleep/wake pattern - especially if yours has done a workout all day yesterday!

But get to a m/w too to put your mind at rest

It is probaly nothing, but no harm to go to hospital and have a trace of the babys heartbeat. It will probably start kicking on the way there. Do have something to eat and drink first though. Sometimes seems to make a difference.

Thank you. I'm not complaining at the ice cream suggestion I will go and try that now and see what happens. Does anyone know if a practice nurse would have a doppler to be able to have a listen in? My GP is pretty impossible to get hold of, as is my midwife.

possibly- i think she'll have access to the same doppler but they might insist a gp or midwife does it...either way, if the food/drink thing doesn't work, phone them and they'll fit you in asap- probably right away.

I've thought this both last night and this morning with my LO (am 40+2).
Try a bath too, that always gets mine going.

If you can't get in contact with your midwife then ring labour ward as they may be happy to see you. My baby has very busy days and very quiet days and I'm 33+1.

ring delivery suite and see if they want to take you in for a short period of monitoring. If its nothign you might feel a bit daft, if its something belive me you will be very glad you phoned

I had this the other day and phoned the midwife who told me to go to the day assessment unit at the hospital for monitoring. I was told to drinkg ice cold drinks and sit still for an hour - still nothing so went and was monitored and the little one woke up and went moving mad! Midwife did say that from 32/33 weeks movements really slow down but this is mostly to do with lack of room. Hope all is well but get yourself some reassurance.

How are things?

Any change in movements needs to be checked out.

Just wondered if you got this checked and how things were?

Thank you. I forgot to check back! I did what everyone recommended, and still no movement so I went to the hospital where they monitored me for a while. Heartbeat was fine, though to me seems low (about 120 and I remember dds being about 160, but apparently this is normal). They had a poke and they think he has turned breech, which has got me worried, but he still has 7 weeks to turn. They think all the movement the night before may have been him getting himself stuck and trying to get back! So thanks for all the reommendations, and you are all right, they said that any change in movements needs checking, they were so lovely about it and said they would rather people go in

I'm glad everything's fine - a normal fetal heart rate is between 110-180. Did they give you any tips on turning the baby?

Littlelamb if he stays breech you may find the movements are different to a head down baby. My son was breech (undetected until 40 weeks but that's and other story) and he never really kicked just wriggled and squirmed.
