Pregnancy

a silly question...

i know this is a ridculous question but...

if you are on the podgy side and you become PG does the baby or rather is it possible for you to not put on more weight as baby just "fills in the gaps" only reason i ask is that my friend text me to say today her MW said words to this effect.

Conv :

My friend: i think my bumps a bit small dont you?
MW: well if you are podgy to begin with the baby will just fill in the gaps

surely this isnt right???

i'm not sure, but a friend of mine is quite a big (gorgeous to boot) girl, and when i last saw her at about 30 weeks she was only just starting to look really pg and said she hadn't put on much weight at all..

How odd?!

Well you will still put weight on(obviously weight of baby etc) but wont necesarily become big or should i said any bigger than a slimmer person would, if eat healthily and sensibly!

Hello

They say if you are on the larger side to begin with, it can take longer for a 'bump' to form. Same as if you were stick thin any bump is going to be more obvious sooner.

Though, I know, personally, that that isn't always the case, I was a size 12/14 (so not huge but, podgy as you say) when I fell pregnant with DS2, but I still had a bump at 6 weeks, and a very obvious one at that. (same again with the miscarriage.)

As a 'bigger' person, you would probably expect overall weight gained to be less than someone who was average weight or underweight(they would obviously need to gain much more)

I know! How mad. Pregnancy cant fill in gaps and make fat turn into a firm bump. Baby growing in uterus not stomach!

So sorry, I read the question wrong I am ill

I was smaller when I got pregnant with DS1, I put more weight on with DS2 than DS1. But, for the first 3 months with DS1 I couldn't eat anything so I lost a load of weight, and he was quite a bit smaller at birth than DS2.

I suppose if you are carrying weight around your mid-section, a bump won't be so pronounced. Rather rude of her, anyway!

I was just curious, i thought MW was a bit mean to say that really! My friend wasnt huge!

Im currently 5"9 but size 18 so personally wanna loose weight, but makes me dread what a mw might say to me!! she sounds a cow

I'm size 14/16 and had a pot belly before pregnancy and my bump started showing around 9-10 weeks. I'm 21 weeks now and my bump is very prominently sticking out and high and rock hard! So I don't think it necessarily goes that if you are podgy you will show later.

HI just wanted to add...that i'm 5'7 and size 16/18, my first pg i got enormous i could barely walk (at 34 weeks i was measuring for someone around 40+ weeks i was spilling over from every angle)and my dd was 9lbs 13 and a massive placenta apparently afterwards i lost all baby weight quickly then my pg with my second dd i didn't start showing till around 7mths i had this tiny perfect basketball bump and i never told anyone till i was 5mths gone most people did not realise i was pg untill i was 8mths gone !! she was 8lbs but she was tiny..I'm trying again and i have put on a few pounds since my last pg but if my MW gives me any stick i will put her firmly in her place. Good luck.

BB, due to me being a short arse, and along with the huge bump last time (therefore, I'd put on enough weight to push my BMI up to 30 - which is on the edge of 'obese' ), the midwife sent me for a diabetes test. She never once mentioned it was because I was 'fat'.

They are not all dragons, well at least I hope not, because I am going to be a midwife (one day!!) and I don't want to be a dragon!

Infact I can put my hand on my heart and say that the midwife I had last time (and her student midwife) were among some of the nicest people I have ever met, I sooooooo wish they had have been there when I gave birth!

I did read about a bigger lady who was expecting and she had put on about 4lbs. I couldn't believe it.
