I had it with my 2nd pregnancy - DS now age 3! it was picked up around 28 weeks and monitored by me at home with blood monitor prick test each day and then insulin for last couple of weeks -
DS was elective section at 37 weeks ish - was 9lb so goodness knows what he would have been at full term ! have you been diagnosed?

Hi Piskie - I had it too, I think it was picked up at about 28 weeks from a routine blood test. Had to take a Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) to confirm it and then had to attend a diabetic clinic at the hospital once a fortnight for the rest of the pregnancy for monitoring. I was able to control mine with diet so didn't need to take any meds - I had to stick to a really low GI diet i.e. no sweets or sugar, low fat, lots of veg etc. It was probably the healthiest I've eaten in my life! I got a couple of extra growth scans late on to check that DS was not too big which he wasn't but they still induced me on my due date just to minimise any risk.

I had to have a follow up GTT about 2 months after DS was born and that confirmed that everything was back to normal.

Hope this helps.

yes, just been diagnosed and really worried after reading up that it might be something that will affect me for the rest of my life and might affect the baby...

Hi Piskie - I was diagnosed at about 27 weeks with my 2nd pregnancy. I had to monitor my blood sugar levels, but controlled it with diet, with no need for insulin. Like Peppermint158, it was probably the healthiest I'd eaten as well!
I went to full term and had a normal delivery. I was worried about the effects - but have been routinely tested since (ds now 2) and everything has been clear. The main affect on the baby (I was told by diabetic midwife) is that it can make them a heavier birthweight. My ds was 8lb 12oz.
