dyeing hair while pregnant.....is it bad for baby?

I have read in the past that shouldn't dye hair while pg especially in first 3 months.

Recently, a hairdresser on TV said that although he wasn't a doctor he would recommend not to dye hair in early stages.

I have been dying my hair for years (my own natural colour to cover grey!) and have had it done twice at a hairdressers in 1st 3 months of pgncy and worrying a little now. I continued dyeing hair with ds1 but used a shop bought dye that didn't contain ammonia.

Some say use herbal dyes, others say use ones without ammonia

any comments?

my salon won't dye my hair at all.(20 weeks now)

instaed they foiled my whole head , and it looks just the same.

some of the chemicals get in your bloodstream, and then the babies, and personally i wouldn't risk it for vanity. get foils instead!

Not sure about herbal etc.

I used to use castings (semi permenant), but have stopped now I'm pregnant - it's not worth the risk - no matter how small that risk might be!

It's probably best for your fetus if you don't expose yourself unecessarily to chemicals when you can avoid them altogether.

hi dizzy36

i am a hairdresser, there is no danger in dyeing your hair whilst pregnant. hairdressers will advise you have foils instead of full head colour, this just means that the hair dye will not touch your scalp and treat the hair only. hormones produced in pregnancy can react with the hair dye and cause an undesired colour ie green. this is the only reason people will warn you off having your hair coloured.

i am 31 weeks and have had full head foils throughout my pregnancy

coolkat - still have it done aslong as it is done by foils, dont have the color applied directly onto the scalp.
