Pregnancy

20 weeks and not showing

I'm 20 weeks pregnant on Thursday but still not really showing. I can notice a small bump but when clothed don't look remotely pregnant, just fatter! Getting quite upset about it as people keep commenting that I don't look pregnant at all and that I "can't be 20 weeks"! Also worried that this means the baby is too small. Is anyone else in the same boat?

You'll probably have one of those bumps that literally appears overnight.

I've seen it happen with a teacher at DDs school -announced she was pregnant, no bump for weeks until one Monday morning she appeared with a really obvious bump!

When I had my DS, I had a teeny tiny bump when I went into the delivery suite to have him!! I could have passed for not being pregnant if I had a jumper on. He was not small for his dates.

Don't worry about it. Baby will not be too small - scans check this anyway. People have differing amounts of "space" inside their bodies and so bump doesn't always need to poke out much.

Soon you'll be the size of an elephant and annoyed with people saying "Only 30 weeks?? Are you sure it's not twins???!"

that's a relief. Annoying though, would rather look pregnant that like I've just gained 10lbs!

It does all depend how you carry the bean my mum said she was in her size 10 jeans the whole way through with me and only had a tiny bump and I was 7lb 6 some women carry the baby towards the back and so dont pop out!

a friend of mine put on 14lbs in her first pg and her baby was 7lbs

Wih my first preganncy I got to 26 weeks before a bump really appeared and some ppl only noticed I was pg at 34 weeks at work, 3 weeks before mat leave. Baby a healthy 8lb 2 when born and on the upper 95% percentile for height so I wouldn't worry.
I don't know if connected, but I also first felt him move at about 24 weeks which is later than most.

Is it your fisrt and do you carry weight anyway? Also, do you have strong abdominal muscles? all this can mean you not showing until later ... I didn't show with ds1 untilabout 25 weeks, then I just exploded outward.

I took my work trousers off one night, and tried to put them on the next morning, an the zip wouldn't even go half way up. It can be that sudden! And he was 8lb 7oz.

With ds1 I didn't show til about 30 weeks - was SO SICK of people telling me my bump was "too small". People don't realise that comments like that can be really worrying for a pg mum.
With ds2 I had a bigger bump at 15 weeks than fullterm with ds1! And ds2 was smaller in weight than ds1 so no direct correlation (sp?) there. Now pg (16weeks) with dc3 and again got a bigger bump than first time around. Oh, the curse of now having rubbish stomach muscles....

With my first I bought a babygro when I was 41 weeks pg. The assistant asked who was having a baby! She looked quite surprised when I said I was and that it was a week late

I went off on maternity leave from work at 36 weeks and colleagues hadn't even realised I was pregnant. I had no bump, just looked fatter. DD1 was 8lb 7. Ignore everyone and don't worry. My midwife was always happy with measurements etc for what they are worth.

I'm five months (23 weeks) this week with first, and only now really getting a bump (and it's still more or less disguised under clothes). Still in size 12 jeans, though top button is done up with a hair bobble. But when I went for my 20-week scanner, the scan-person (what IS their proper name? I know they have one .. ) told me the baby was bigger than average ... so I guess it just depends!

i had a tiny little bump with my first and second ( i left 5 years between them and my muscles recovered) this time my bumps a bit bigger but still not huge and i reckon its cos the muscles werent quite up to the job only 15 mths after my last pregnancy. plus im tall (5 FT 10) and have a really long torso so i hold them in well

MyLittlePrincess · 18/11/2007 18:19

I had a tiny bump throughout my whole pregnancy, the first time anyone noticed i was pregnant was when my waters broke two weeks early! Even then the people on the maternity ward were asking me if i thought everything was going to be ok as they thought it must be really premature! my midwife assured me it was because i have a long torso, im 5ft 7, and also because i had strong tummy muscles...baby born two weeks early at 6lb 9oz 100% healthy. i wouldn't worry about it, though you do miss out on the 'special' treatment by strangers, like helping with your bags, giving you the last seat ect!

oh, and ds1, with whom I could have passed as just having put on a bit of weight until about 7mths pg, was 9lb 3oz

Hi Gangle just seconding what the others are saying and don't worry about not having a huge bump just yet. And to those who do feel the need to comment that you 'can't be 20 weeks' pregnant, just smile and say you have very good abdominal muscles, flash a grin, and say proudly and with confidence that you ARE 20 weeks pregnant.

A friend from work was constantly commenting that on HER second pregnancy she was huge (meaning I was not) and I would just grin smugly and say "I must be lucky then".

You'll get your bump darling, and it'll be a lovely perfectly shaped football one, that looks gorgeous and then you can buy lots of fabulous Isabella Oliver clothes to show it off (and you'll have the last laugh if you manage to avoid stretch marks!)
