washing stuff for newborns

I know I should wash all new clothes to get rid of any fluff and other shop nasties before the baby wears them, should I also wash things like the cellular blankets (is that what they're called? They're cotton and have holes in them) before use too? Should I only use non-bio?

Yes and yes!

I would and did even for my not pnb number 3. Mostly because they often have a fabric treatment on them to help them glide through sewing machines (I think) in the manufacturing process and one wash gets rid of it.

I always use non bio, though that is for env reasons as much as anything else. It is meant to be kinder on skin

Yep, I think you need to wash everything, something to do with the chemicals that are used. I washed everthing including towels, cot bumpers, the lot. Just to be on the safe side and so it all smelt of mummys clothes

I´ve only ever used half measures of normal washing powder for my baby things. Has never been a problem.

I washed everything including bibs! Definately use non-bio. I used Fairy non-bio at first but have discovered Surcare (small white box with blue writing) and it is lots better as DD and I have excema.

I only did this for my first!

Mind you, I ironed my muslin squares too

Only do it if you want to.

Oh and I almost never iron anything (except shirts maybe, under duress!!) so I won't be ironing baby clothes, esp muslin squares

I wouldn't wash loads of newborn stuff before you have the baby. I returned all of DS1s as they would have been too small

I've only washed the stuff for the Cub because it's been in the attic for four years...

I think you're right about the clothes notadragonofsoup... I'm going to wait to see how big he is before I wash the clothes. I've got loads of stuff from my sister which has been washed before to use in the meantime... I was just wondering about the blankets and sheets really. I guess the same goes for the sleeping bags... wash them before use.
