Saw this online just now.

Hmm, don't think they're really saying anything new are they?

I find it really patronising.

RCOG are still saying there's no evidence low levels of alcohol in pregnancy is harmful.

The reason the govt are advising no alcohol is because it might not be 'clear' what low levels are. Do they assume women are complete idiots?

I heard this on the news this morning. Apparently there's no new scientific evidence but there's a risk, so that's their advice.

It's my birthday tomorrow and was really looking forward to a glass of wine (have been a once a week since got past the twelve week stage - grimly clinging to govt guidelines) - don't think I can cope with the guilt now

Bllluuuuuchhhhh - for the past 39 weeks, even the thought of alcohol sends me head first towards a loo! I have not been able to handle any alcohol, even s sip of champers at a wedding. That was also the first sign that I was preg, as I was violently ill all night after 1/2 glass of wine!
Having said that, i dont think having the occasional glass of wine is a bad thing. Maybe just lay off the tequila slammers (isn't that how it all started anyway?)

LNI - I personally wouldn't worry about the change in advice - it's not based on any evidence, they've just decided that women are too stupid to follow their previous advice so they'll save the poor dears the effort of thinking and tell them not to drink at all. I had a small glass of champagne for my 30th - it was about 100mls and I was at c20 wks and hadn't drunk at all before then. I really enjoyed it! I don't think the advice is aimed at people like you. It's aimed at people who don't bother to try and work out what the rules are and what is 'safe' (and who probably don't care anyway). I can understand people deciding not to drink at all (I've had about 5 half glasses of wine in the past 8 months) but I wouldn't change my mind simply because of this change in Govt guidance.

Thanks for that Catz. Totally agree with you - just that I think we're going out tomorrow evening and I'm going to be paranoid about someone looking disapproving (not DH I hasten to add) as it's been in the news today. Shouldn't be so prone to peer pressure.

Loose top and breathing in called for clearly!

I'm not a 'peer pressure' kind of girl. I just made a decision to not drink. However, when one of your cravings is vodka it pays to be ultra strong. So I added this 'news' (because it's not really news is it?)to my arsenal to defeat the cravings with

I'm 21 wks pg and have had a total of about 4/5 glasses of wine throughout the pregnancy so far. I have the odd mouthful now and then from my DH's glass and I had a glass of champagne (included in my total!) after a very hard day moving house at the weekend.

I've not been drunk, tipsy, impaired at all. For those wishing to have an occasional glass in a public setting, let those disapproving stares wash over you - you're not public property now that you're pregnant so ignore them.

I also read this in the paper today....Like it said in the article " but if modest consumption of wine during pregnancy was as bad as they claim, then all french people would be brain damaged"........

I really don't appreciate the guilt directed at pregnant women these days....I think the guidelines are directed at the small minority of the pregnant population who binge drink during their pregnancy. It's safer for the government to suggest no booze rather than a little bit. my 1 unit a week of alcohol keeps me going sometimes....I long for that weekly glass of white wine. mmmmmmmmmmmm
