Fetal hiccups - please reassure me

Okay, I've got to that stage of pregnancy where everything is a big old worry, I really hope I'm worrying about nothing.

I'm 36+5 - for the past month or so baby has had pretty regular hiccups (usually coinciding with me eating lunch) for 2-5 minutes per go. I thought it was pretty 'cute'.

This morning I, like a fool, Googled fetal hiccups - and there are all sorts of stories about how sometimes it can indicate that the baby is trapped in its umbilical cord.

In good news I've had four dopplers in the past six weeks (most recently yesterday) and everything has been fine, nothing to worry about (baby's heart varies between 138 and 148 BPM). Movement is otherwise normal.

I'm over-worrying aren't I?

I'd say you are likely worrying about nothing - lots of babies get fatal hiccups. My second did - he hiccups a lot now he's arrived too!
However I'm not an expert if you are worried please talk to your midwife

All four of mine had hiccups the midwife always told me if was perfectly normal

My dd1 had hiccups loads from really early on. She was, and is, absolutely fine.

My daughter had hiccups every day for the last few months of my pregnancy. And then for the first few months of her life on the 'outside'. It's very common, and completely normal.

Yep, ds was a very hicuppy baby. Both before and after birth. Now aged 8 and as fit as a fiddle.

Dr Google is not your friend.

There was another thread like this a week or so ago. My DD had lots of hiccups in utero and is absolutely fine now. Still hiccups a lot!

Finola you're 100% right that Dr Google is no friend of mine, it's amazing how quickly a cute little hiccup can turn into a potentially fatal situation.

My first dd had hiccups all the time and, as it turns out, did get caught up in her cord shortly before birth (which caused some irregularities with her heartbeat but she was totally fine). However, my second dd also had hiccups a lot and there were no issues with her at all!

My DD hiccuped a lot inside me and also when she was born. I thought it was very cute.

Not sure how scientific this is, but my midwife at the time told me it was a good sign of the diaphragm developing and that she'd probably be a good talker.

Well, she hasn't stopped babbling since she was about five weeks old, so maybe the midwife was right!

Ds3 hiccuped loads and if thats the case lazy then u are right, she chatters away and she is 2 now.

I wouldn't over google. We can develop an addiction and google every teeny thing... spk to ur MW for any concerns...and for now try out some relaxation techniques - not long to go now

Both mine hiccupped a lot before birth and after. Both are fit and healthy - just very hiccuppy!

My son had loads of hiccups in the womb and still gets them a lot (he's 6 months)

Another one with a v hiccupy baby here (pre and post birth). Luckily I didn't know it was something to worry about! Always cooed and babbled a lot too, although his actual verbal development is pretty average so far...

I am 24 weeks and my baby gets hiccups a couple of times a day, so did my other babies and only one was wrapped in his cord and his hiccups were no different to any others. Don't stress so much lol

I did the same as you OP, googled and scared myself as baby has been getting hiccups 2-3 times a day since Saturday. Asked the midwife today who said she'd never heard of it indicating a problem and asked me what I'd heard. When I mentioned cord around the neck she said this wasn't actually a problem in uterus as the baby isn't breathing yet. Seemed obvious when she said it!

Weirdest feeling ever is a hiccuping tummy when you are in the bath - if you manage to sit really still the hiccups make ripples. One of my best pregnancy memories :o

Had this with DS2 and he also got hiccups all the time after he was born. He's an 11 year old chatterbox now!

Thank you so much for posting this! Have also read the same thing and I have a hiccuper on board. 3-4 times a day, for at least 10 minutes a time! Have also had two scans in the past two weeks due to reduced movement and blood flow is perfect and cord not tangled, so remind myself of that in the middle of the night when she's flipping from transverse to breech to head down.

Not sure what we'll do if she's a chatter-box, DH and I are both quite quiet and introverted!

My hiccupy baby turned into a non-stop talker too (although I love this now it is tempered with her 13 year old hormones as she still communicates but not ALL THE TIME). She still gets hiccups all the time.
