heartburn - argghh

I'm 25 weeks and have what seems like constant heartburn. Which is bothering my asthma and making it hard to breathe.

Gaviscon isn't really doing much - though maybe I'm not taking it often enough.

Anyone have any tips?

No tips but I'm 25 weeks tomorrow and the heartburn has kicked in this week!

A tsp of bicarb dissolved in warm water. Tastes rank and makes you belch but it neutralises the stomach acid so helps you feel a lot better

And sleep sat up if you can, it gets a lot worse overnight

Tip 1: Fuck the recommended dose, you can safely swig it at will if you need to.

Tip 2: Go and ask the doc for some Ranitidine instead. Its much more effective.

I was prescribed Omeprazole when I was pregnant.

Six years later I still have to take it because the sodding heartburn never left after I had the baby.

I suffered really badly. I was advised to stay ahead of it! So took gaviscon ahead of every meal and before bed even if I wasn't suffering. That and glasses of cold milk!

memyself did you try to just stop taking it? Omeprazole can cause a rebound effect if you take it long term. Reducing the stomach acid can cause it to burn when it returns to normal levels. If you reduce it slowly over 4/5 weeks, you might find you can come off it.

I take supermarket brand ranitidine (lays 12 hours) and then Rennies. Supermarket branded Rennies aren't as good.

Lasts 12 hours, not lays.

Swig gaviscon. The double action one actually used to make me sick which helped. And a spoonful of vinegar really worked for me.

Imnotaslimjim I did stop taking it after the pregnancy, but the heartburn never left me. I went back to the doctor who said it was reflux and prescribed it again.

I'm supposed to take it every day, I don't though, but the longest I can go without needing it is 3 days.

I had this a few weeks back, horrendous indigestion and I thought it was really affecting my asthma.....
Realised it was actually the masses of gaviscon I was drinking which was making me wheezy. I'm now on ranitidine and it's fab.....haven't used an inhaler since a couple of days into taking it!
Wish I'd realised the link earlier, I'm in DC 4!!!

Oh god, this is the worst. Had it through my pregnancy with DS1 and now it's back with a vengeance on DS2 (currently 22 weeks). It wakes me up, and gives me terrible coughing fits too. I tried Gaviscon but the taste is so bad that it makes me gag or throw up. Sad Rennies are the best tablets I've tried, amd I now drink gallons of milk (never drink milk when I'm not pregnant) which I find very soothing. Really hope this passes soon for you OP.

Rennies work for me. I find them much better than gaviscon. I also sip banana milkshake which seems to help in the short term.

Ranitidine from Tesco (£1.50 for 12) and Gaviscon Advance / Rennie as and when. It's grim, but much more manageable since I started the ranitidine! Wish I'd mentioned t to GP at last appt as I would have asked for omeprazole. On home strait now, hope it fucks off when the baby is here - it did last time!

Thanks all for responding.

I've now got Ranitidine - was prescribed yesterday eve.

Asthma flared up and spent Eve a&e - I'm ok though. The staff were fantastic - really, really thorough. Like a pin cushion today tho!
