Hi.
My doctor has given me morphine for pain. It's mainly for at night as I'm finding it hard to sleep because of pain, it's only a 2.5ml - 5ml dose. So very small

But I'm scared to take it incase it has an effect on the baby. I'm 28+2.

Has anyone got any advice. Has anyone taken it while pregnant?
Thanks.

They give you morphine in labour. Only small amounts cross the placenta and it is far less dangerous to baby than alcohol or smoking.

It should be used sparingly - it'll have no long lasting effects for baby but morphine type medications can be addictive and if you are using large amounts regularly (which 2.5mg at night occasionally is certainly not) then post birth baby could in theory have problems with withdrawal. Make sure you're sensible with it - i'm sure your doctor has gone through the other sedative like effects and making sure you're safe once you've taken it.

Oh and another pleasant affect is constipation - so therefore make sure you're drinking plenty of water and taking fibre!

I didn't have morphine in labour last time. Just gas and air.
MW says they've stopping giving it in labour now as its bad for baby.

Yea I'm only taking it at night to help me sleep. But not every night. Just when it's bad.

I was on morphine for chronic pain at a much higher level than you until around 16 weeks pregnant. I'm now 26 weeks and baby is perfect. I only came off it as did to the level I took, it did make the baby really sleepy and I was advised to come off it before the third trimester. I can't see how your dosage would cause any problems.

I was put on ormamorph oral morphine from 29 to 33 weeks I'd had surgery that failed and was too pregnant for it to be fixed I had my son at 33 weeks and he had no withdrawal I was advised by obstetrician it was fine. I was on a morphine iv press pump the last 3 days I was told if he came out withdrawing the hospital was well equipt to deal with it. I'm sorry your going through this Flowers
