Hi there,
I'm new here just wanted to see what peoples thoughts are on this or if anyone has experienced this? I already have 2 dds woth my partner and have been on the pill for 6 years. I won't lie I am not a 'perfect' pill taker and miss the odd one here and there. This month I was due my break from the 4th Feb I somehow missed 3 pills before this so decided to just take my break early (I have never done this before but thought it would probaly be ok). Me and OH dtd 2/3 times during my break (it was his birthday...) anyway my break finished on mon 8th and I started my pill again on the 9th- so I had no period on break or any pms symptoms? This has never happened in the 6 years I have been on the pill. I am having very mild cramps that last maybe an hour a day but nothing like period pains, also I took a test this morning which was BFN - so could this happen from my pill cycle been messed up? Or has anyone got pregnant around the time of their break by missing pills either before or after? Sorry for long winded post this is driving me mad! Thanks in advance

If you missed three pills and then took your break, you could potentially be pregnant. The instructions on the packs are to skip the break and go straight to the next pack if you miss more than one pill just before a break. But only another test in a few days will tell you for sure.

Hi thanks for your reply as I has already missed the 3 pills I just took my break early if that makes sense so still only had a 7 day break only 3 days early?

So what I did was take 17/18 pills in a row then have a 7 day break instead of 21 pills in a row? Will this make the pill less effective - I have confused myself now...... anyone??

I know what you mean and I believe that what you have done is not what's advised when you miss more than two in a row. I think you should call your GP or family planning and get some proper help, I used to find myself missing pills and getting confused too but to be frank I think you have a risk of pregnancy here and need someone more knowledgeable to help :)

You only dont need to use contraception in your pill break if you have taken all 1 of the previous days as it builds up the protection to cover the week off. If you havent taken all the pills then there is a risk you could be pregnant, but you may have to wait a while to test again.

21 of the previous days not 1!

Yes, I'm afraid that although what you did might sound logical, it's not what the instructions for the pill say to do, so there is a chance you could have ovulated. I don't know the biological reasons why 18 pills followed by a break gives less protection than 21 pills followed by a break, but the instructions clearly differentiate between the two and say to skip the break. I'd guess it's probably a small chance you got pregnant, but it is there.

Hi thanks for your replys - I just wondered if anyone had got pregnant from doing this? I will wait a week and test again. My OH and I already have a dd7 and dd9 and we are not against a 3rd so it wouldn't be the end of the world just not the best timing - I will only have myself to blame for that Hmm x
