Pregnancy

won't be given a scan at 12 weeks

Hi all
I'm 6 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child and have been told today by doc that I won't get a 12 week scan and will only get a scan at 20 weeks. This is due to me having a straightforward pregnancy last time. I was quite surprised to hear this as 20 weeks seems so far away. Has anyone else been told this?

That is shocking. You need the 12 week for nuchal fold test among others. And your bloods get done. Baby gets measured.

And I'm not a midwife or anything but that cannot be right at all.

In the UK under NHS care you have the 12 week scan as standard (for viability and various tests including for DS). Sounds like your GP is misinformed, have you had your Booking In appt with midwife?

It's also called a Dating Scan for a reason. My due date changed based on my 12 week scan (actually done at 13 weeks)

Thanks Dung - I thought that about the nuchal fold too.... The bloods they do separately apparently. I will double check with midwife as doc I saw today was a locum but it's really stressed me out as getting to 12 weeks and having scan very reassuring.

Thanks bitta. Doc said she will send off paperwork to midwife and I'll see her around 12 weeks. Yes - she must have misinformed me but she printed an official looking schedule for mums who are on 2nd baby which is why I panicked. Thanks for the reassurance!

The Booking In appt with midwife is usually around 8-10 weeks so chase it up in a week or two. The scan happens separately. Good luck with it all.

I'd say definitely misunderstanding, call midwives ahead of booking in to check

Thanks all - I will definitely chase it up, I thought it couldn't be right but just needed some second opinions as GP seemed so confident that this was the case. Thanks so much for all your replies.

My friend pregnant with her second had a 12 week around the same time as me. If they don't book you one then call the hospital and get one booked yourself!

Good luck

Jeez! Complain about the GP too to your surgery and your midwife, he is definitely wrong, he could be saying this to other women who might not know the system and would just believe him.

He may be right. I've had babies in different parts of the country and it has varied. Sometimes ive had to pay private if ive wanted the nuchal test and bloods

Thanks again to everyone for your replies on this last week when I was having a mini freak out! I received my hospital letter today saying that I have a booking in appt and giving my scan date for 7 jan - phew! So relieved. I will definitely feedback to the Dr about the misinformation. Thanks all x
