Superhuman Smelling Powers

Hi everybody

I am nearly 12 weeks now - discovered MN about a month ago and love it, what a great collection of voices and stories. Have been weeping and laughing - keep coming back for the comfort and procrastination - work schmurk.

So, I am sick and tired all day and every day, but not complaining as it is worth it (can't wait for scan now for it to become real). The trigger for knee melting nausea is smells - I can smell EVERYTHING, the carpet which stinks wierd and horrid and now all my clothes have the same smell, I can smell the loo from my bed even though it is super clean, I could smell booze on our builder's breath this morning, I can smell the cheese in teh fridge even when the door is closed - and it is driving me crazy. Does this go away? And is there anything I can do? As for farts - even my own - yikes.

Any tips welcome

it will fade...usually in the second trimester...when the nausea can also start to go....tis very annoying... i once had to spend the entire day sat in our bedroom with the windows open with the fan on as DH had cooked chicken!! i love chicken ! and oranges...... the smell was shocking!

This has been the absolute bane of my pregnancy! I still can't go into public loos and I'm 23 weeks! But it has got much better than it was when I was around 12-14 weeks. Very few smells upset me now. Dh is most happy about this, as it means he can have curry again. So I think it does pretty much go away. Which is great cos I couldn't even pee without being incredibly sick!

yep I had this too (along with sickness). Any strong smells would make me want to vom! Couldn't use my spray deodrant and had to buy a roll on. Eventually it will go. I am fine now. x

i've got super human smelling powers too and did have with the last 2 pregnancy's. my dh had a ham sandwich at lunch and i nearly spewed on the table. also can't bear the smell of cooking the same as last time, which means throwing some kind of crap in the oven and leaving the kitchen till the oven timer goes off!

I had this too although it has eased up a little now (I am 21 weeks).

I remember one week everyone I interviewed seemed to absolutely stink of perfume or aftershave or worse still ciggies (made me want to heave!)

Nothing helped the associated morning sickness at all, not ginger, mints, anything, but I told my dh that strong smells were making me feel ill and I did manage to get out of cleaning the dog poop for about two months!

It was suddenly being overpowered by the smell in our Reprographics Unit at work that made me think "I'm a bit late, better get a pregnancy test" - I didn't start actually throwing up until relatively late (10 weeks, still having trouble at nearly 17 weeks) but smells... at work we a huge amount of cooking smells and strong food smells, I wish people wouldn't eat lunch at their desks!

This has eased up for me - mainly it was the smell of baking bread - but it hasn't gone away completely and I am full-term (38 weeks). Some days it is almost gone, other times it flares back up (along with the nausea)!

It's funny how it works. Some smells and flavors which you used to love you now hate and vice versa. I hate the smell of food cooking, but I could smell the dog all day long.

So glad its not just me! I hate the kitchen smell, I've washed, wiped, bleached, scrubbed, as far as I am concerned it still stinks. My clothes smell of the kitchen ( even though they are just washed) and its been driving me crazy. I am nearly 12 weeks.... please stop soon I cant think about anything apart from smells!

Stood at the bus stop yesterday and some guy had really strong aftershave on, and he got on my bus and followed me into work too! Urgh, I had a headache from it all day. Plus some sitting near me was wearing Benefit Babydoll perfume which usually love, but it just lingers under my nose.
Also, and I am ashamed to say this DHs breath make me feel ill at the moment! Plus I've noticed he gets this sort of morning smell which make me want to hurl! He really isn't a smelly guy at all, the total opposite, but I can just smell everything at the moment. At least now I have an excuse for making DH take the bin out - that's the worst, PG or not!

Oh, God - I was exactly the same! Lasted from about weeks 7-10 before it started improving. I had to hold my breath if I wanted to open the fridge door, couldn't bear the smell of vegetables cooking (DH cooked himself roasted vegetables on evening and I opening the kitchen door and ran straight for the sink!), couldn't go near the bin, and curry was a major no-no: couldn't go into a curry house and could smell the one nearest to my bus stop even though it's 100m up the road! Also had to put the fruit bowl, which normally lives on the kitchen table, in the cupboard under the stairs as the smell of fruit - especially ripe apples or bananas - would make me heave.

The smell thing stopped pretty much as soon as the nausea did. It was the worst three weeks of my life - and I know I got off lightly compared with lots of pregnant women.
