36 weeks and getting pains...

Hi girls

I'm 36+1 today. I have had v.light period pains for the past couple of days but they haven't been painful or regular so I have just ignored them. This morning since I woke up they have been stronger and more regular. When I was on the tube this morning (my last day in work today - yay!), they even distracted me from reading. I had to concentrate through them (pain was in my bits, the tops of my legs and my back) and I was thinking about starting to time them although they don't seem to be anywhere near as strong now I'm settled in work.

Also I lost quite a bit of cm (tmi - sorry!) when I got up this morning but that has been usual for me at various stages of my pg.

Should I be concerned at all? Did anyone else's labour start like this? I have a long last day in work ahead and am trying to ignore it but can't help feeling a little excited (but concerned because my baby isn't quite cooked yet).

Knowing my luck, this will go on until I am 42 weeks and I will be induced.

Hope you are all well.

sounds like it could be the start of labour-- I'd say you certainly won't be going to 40 weeks, anyway.

Two of my babies were born at 36 weeks and were small but fine. Have you got your bags packed and ready?

ILMB - I am also 36 weeks (well 36 + 3 to be exact).

I had these type of pains for a good 6 hours or so on Wednesday, gradually getting more and more uncomfortable but by no means painful compared to labour itself. I took myself for a long hot bath working on the basis it would either stop them or intensify them. it did intensify them for another hour or so and also started getting back ache. DH and I decided if it was going to be the start of things was a good idea to take some paracetamol and try to get some rest before things really got moving ............................ and then nothing, paracetamol kicked in and verything stopped.
Have had a few period type pains since but nothing regular.

So all in all - no advice, just sympathy as i know how you must be feeling.

Thanks for replying.

It is my first so am unsure of what to expect.

I haven't got bags packed but know exactly what I need to put in it so am not too worried about that. I was going to sort that out next week when I was off work. I was planning a homebirth so hopefully wouldn't have had to have used it anyway.

I can't have a bath unfortunately - I am in work. LOL!

I'm planning on going out with workmates after work too. If this long day doesn't make the pains worse then I know it is just a 'scare' or whatever you want to call it.

Hope it doesn't go on for weeks though. V.v.annoying.

Although it could be a sign that things are getting ready I would doubt anything is likely to happen any time soon (in my completely unprofessional opinion). I would try and carry on as normal as best as you can and hopefully your mind will be taken off of it.

I noticed my pains got a lot worse when I wasn't active, I spent 4 hours walking around a shopping centre and they were just noticeable, boy did that change when I got home and relaxed a bit.

Sounds like what my big pregnancy book ('Queen Charlotte's Hospital Guide to Pregnancy and Birth') calls 'false labour' - it says it suggests that the real thing won't be far behind (though doesn't really explain what they mean by that!)

Foghornleghorn - have you had any pains since?

I think they are defo just pre-labour pains. Not letting myself get too excited because I know these could last for weeks. I just didn't expect them to increase in intensity so soon.

Hope it is a sign that things will happen for us soon...well before 42 weeks anyway.

Yeah a few but nothing too strong, keep having tightenings and loosenings too. I'm finding it a bit strange really because although I already have a DD, my waters broke with her hours before I'd even had any contractions so I new giving birth was pretty imminent. Now all these niggly pains here and there are getting right on my nerves.

Keep an eye on other things too like a show, waters trickling etc, loose bowels ( I've had these today, sorry for TMI).

Foghorn - It's amazing how every labour is different isn't it? You'd think that you would know straight away if you have already been through it.

Hope my waters don't go in work. Having to get from EC2 to West London with trickling waters doesn't appeal to me. Ha ha.

So true ILMB, am finding it quite hard this time tbh as I pressumed everything would just happen in the same order it did with DD.

Here's some reasuring news for you - copied from due Nov thread :

A friend of mine finished up work two weeks ago and on her last day, she got home, called her DH at 7.30 to say she thought her waters had gone, was 9cm by 9pm andhad the baby at 12.14am! No pain during labour, only during the second stage....so good luck - we could all do with a labout like that I reckon! (Although I would like some time off first to relax, even if I can just spend 1 day in bed reading)

LOL! Lucky lady. Hope mine happens as quickly and fuss-free as that.

I am still getting regular pains and am starting to get agitated now (in a PMT way) but don't know if that is down to the fact that I have just been out for a long lunch and am feeling a bit tired. I have backache too.

I'm really hoping this doesn't go on for weeks. Otherwise you'll have me on here moaning everyday.

Hmmm... ILMB, I want you to tidy your desk and go home.

If the pains get any more intense then I'm going to go home.

They are just like period pains - not as high up as the area where my ovaries are (just under my hips) - but a bit further down and aching round my back too.

I had Braxton Hicks up until about 32 weeks where I felt my bump tighten but there was no pain so I know they are not the same BH's that I have experienced. I didn't BH's were painful anyway???

I meant 'I didn't THINK BH's were supposed to be painful?'.

Hi Foghorn

Hope you had a good weekend

Well I had a few strong contraction type pains in the early hours of Sunday morning. I managed to get myself back off to sleep. Since then I have just had ye olde regular period type pains.

I see my midwife tomorrow so I'll see what she says. I'm drinking loads of cranberry juice just incase I am getting this totally wrong and I have a bit of a water infection.

How are you? Any more pains?

That's a good idea, water infections now good. I've had them with both of my pregnancies (this time was in hospital 3 days before our wedding with it).

Have been experiencing the same really. Had alot of braxton hicks last night which were making it very hard to sleep, that coupled with horrible heartburn I wasn't a happy bunny.

Good luck at your m/w tomorrow
