Sorry for my second thread of today having major anxiety today.

I'm only 14 weeks but my mum thinks I should write a list of everything I need to buy before the baby arrives and slowly buy things instead of getting myself all worked up when I'm about to give birth.

The thing is I don't have a clue what I need to get

Can anyone give me an idea of the essentials please?

Feel like I'm going to be a shit mum

Congrats first of all Flowers

Second - YOU WILL NOT BE A SHIT MUM

Third - I'm 26 weeks and still not got half the stuff I should have.

My list of "need it before baby arrives" is:

Car seat & base
Moses basket or crib
Pram or sling
Cot (eventually, as baby probably in basket for a while in first instance)
Mattresses and sheets
A few blankets
Muslins
Changing mat
Nappies (I've so far only bought 2 packs of newborn sized ones)
Some face cloths for washing
And some baby clothes - vests, baby gros, (about 10 of each)
scratch mittens
A bouncer seat

You could buy so much stuff it's ridiculous.
And with the exception of my pram and some clothes, everything else is second hand!!

Look for shops that specialise in kids stuff, that are community shops or recycling type shops.

You also might find that people come out of the wood work with stuff for you.

And tell your mum to chill. That she is stressing you out, that you want to wait until 20 week scan before buying anything but you are looking around and pricing things.

You'll be grand Cake

Buying stuff early doesn't make you a good mum - loving your baby will and they don't really need a lot just need you. You will be great FlowersFlowers

If it makes you feel better - I am 38 weeks and am have only just got things together (although they are still in their boxes for the most part Shock). You can get your list together and do all your research over time (and it's quite good fun too) then buy them when you are good and ready!

My list (copied from other peoples and on what people have given me):
Pram with carrycot attachment
Car seat and base
Bedside Cot
Sling (second hand from my sister)
Changing table/chest of drawers for nursery (didn't have anything in there before)
Sheets/Swaddle Blankets/Cotton Blankets (a few as didn't know what I needed - will buy more later)
Cot (second hand from sister for when moves out of bedside cot)
Jungle Playmat thingy (second hand from sister)
Bouncer chair thingy (second hand from sister)
Clothes for the baby (I got squillions of sleeper suits/vests/booties/hats/scratch mits/muslin cloths when I left work to go on maternity as presents - fabulous Smile) but you will need a few tings in new born and 0-3 months sizes to get you started - after all you don't know how big/little they will be and get clothes relevant to when they are due (e.g. snowsuit if winter baby probably not so handy in August etc..)
Changing mat
Nappies in first size (x 2 packs in different makes to try them out)
Cotton Wool/Wipes
Maternity pads (loads of these)
Nipple pads
Nipple shields (planning on Breast feeding)
Nipple cream
Sudocreme/Vaseline
Nappy bags
Big old knickers for my hospital bag
Feeding bra x 2 (before seeing exactly how much bigger they can actually get...Shock)

That's about it - can't decide on whether I need a baby bath or whether to get a bath support. Will worry about that another day.

Good luck

I've bought nowt yet. I'm 21+2 and had 20 week scan. We've got a tiny box of handmade crochet matinee jackets and bonnets (wtf?!?!) and a blanket from MIL (mmm, useful for a July baby?) and that's it in the house.

Not gonna start buying until early April (need another pay packet!). So you're not late to start buying and what you own will make no difference to what a great mum you'll be. See if you can get your mum to back off a little...

I think she just wants me to slowly start buying things as it's her and my dad buying them I'm only a student so can't afford much at the minute :(

Think she wants an idea of how much I need an how much to put aside. There's a lot to get I didn't even realise! She hasn't had a baby for nearly 21 years and my older sister was too Independent to ask mum for help I don't expect hand me downs off her as she's just had another set of twins!

Thanks for the help once I've written all this down I can slowly research everything!

Look at things in shops to get an idea of what you need/like but to help keep costs down look on ebay/gumtree/freecycle type places.

Also Facebook.
Oh those jack n Jill markets if you in Scotland?

worry Congratulations! The lists above are really comprehensive and look good. If you have them in your area I've got some really good stuff from Table Tots Sales and Nct nearly new sales. We also got a fantastic bundle on e bay. The only things that need to be new are mattresses and car seats. Also, people tend to buy you new born clothes as gifts (they're little and cute!) unless you specifically ask for older ones! I found it helpful to find out the gender if you like being super organised.

If it was me starting again Id buy a co sleeper crib, a moby wrap, clothes & nappies.

Oh and lansinoh cream for bf and bras. Everything else I could have lived without.

I'm definitely finding out the gender it makes things easier plus I've noticed there's very little unisex items out there!
