Nasty Morning Sickness side effect: WARNING: tmi

Whoowhoobewhooooooh · 11/10/2006 09:04

I'm 19+3, and have had pretty bad MS. I was virtually bed-ridden from week 6 to week 15, and then the sickness really started easing off a couple of weeks ago.

I'm still sick 2/3 times a week, but it's a huge improvement.

However, yesterday I was sick twice in the morning, and had a very sore, heart-burn-type feeling in my oesophagus (sp?) afterwards.

I was sick again in the evening, and some bits of brown-red blood came out.

I think I've probably damaged my oesophagus through the sickness, and I don't really see what a doc could do about it. (Tried 2 types of anti-emetics: crap).

Just wanted to know if this had happened to anyone else, if you saw a doc, and what they advised you to do. Can't quite face A&E, and feel ok this morning.

I think you should go and see your GP. I have no experience of this but my mother had a bout of sickness when she had food poisoning and ended up with a hietus (sp) hernia because the sickness had damaged her oesophegus, nothing major but she does have to take medication everyday now because otherwise she gets real bad heartburn. good luck.

you might need some sort of anti inflammatory - if it is poss to have that in pregnancy - sounds like you have had or have hyperemesis ( sp) and the acid from constant vomiting could well have inflamed your oesophagus - i;d go to docs and get some more help - try calling midwife - they might have more experience of this.....sorry you are feeling so bad...poor you

Are you able to keep food and drink down at all? Agree sounds like you have strained yourself from retching, this happened to me in my first pg when I had severe hyperemisis. If you are being sick fairly frequently and not able to take fluids, it could be this and you need to see your GP or the hospital to get checked out, nothing to worry about, just so you don't get dehydrated. Feel better soon, it will ease- honest

Hello whoowhoobewhooooooh. I have had this before when I had hyperemesis with dd2 &3. The GP said it almost like 'straining' your throat from all the heaving (again TMI!!)

Are you taking any medication now? What have you tried so far? I have found phenergan, stemetil and metochlorpromide to be crap. I know not everybody likes to do so while pg, but this time (I'm 16 weeks +5) I am taking ondansetron which is helping me function, and I have managed to avoid hospital, which I didn't with dd2 & 3.

I really really sympathise, it is horrible.

I also vomited blood during 'morning' sickness. Very painful. It's called Mallory Weiss syndrome. I was given Motilium but it didn't really help. Sorry not much advice, with me it never became anything serious.

Hi. I'm a nurse who has worked on a gastro-intestinal surgical ward for eight years - you should go to the doctors with any vomiting of either fresh blood, or something that looks like the coffee grounds that you would tip out of the bottom of a cafetiere. It's really important to go, and they can possibly give you medication to reduce the amount of acid in your stomach. But please go.

Thanks for your posts and sympathy

I'm actually not feeling too sorry for myself. I felt so terrible for the first 3 months, a bit of blood is nothing! At least I can move around and eat.

I'm keeping plenty down (am rapidly turning into a blob).

I was shocked last night as, although I had been sick already a couple of times that day, I hadn't been ill at all for a few days.

Managed to sip some milk last night (which as well as being alkali I understand is mucus-producing) which helped.

Don't worry - I'm not going to self-medicate.

Think I'll wait and see if it happens again, then if it does I'll see my midwife. (Takes a week and a half to get an appointment with my GP. If you say it's an emergency they tell you to go to A&E. Would rather bleed to death).

Belgo: I'll look up Mallory Weiss syndrome.

Anniediv: I was given Prochlorperazine in normal tab then 'melting' tab form: both useless. Had no energy to keep going back for more, and now I'm not being sick every day I'm reluctant to keep taking meds.

X posts lenoracat.

Really?

It looked like blobs of slightly old blood tbh. Not bright red but brownish. So neither coffee granule-like nor bright red.

I'll phone the docs now and bully them into giving me an appointment.

Just logged on and wanted to say I'm glad that you've got an appointment with your GP. Sounds like you've had a rough old time of it - I really hope it improves for you.

Thanks Creena.

My BF's in the middle of a stop-start labour atm, so I don't feel like this is very important right now.

However, I'm not the only one relying on my body atm, so I'm making myself go.

Quick update. GP said it's prob Mallory Weiss, nothing to worry about (unless it increases dramatically in severity) and prescribed me some Gaviscon.

Phew.

Thanks again for all your advice.
