2nd sweep... any point?

I had a sweep Wednesday which was my due date (24th) and now I've been booked in for another on Monday (29th) nothing has happened with the sweep I had no twinges Jo nothing. I just don't see a point in having another for it not to work again. But on the other hand I really don't wanna be induced :( any one else's second sweep worked for them? X

It worked for me. They termed it "an aggressive sweep" (yes it was as nice as it sounds). This enabled me to get to 4.5 cm dilated and they then broke my water and 4 hours later, DC1 arrived with no further intervention. IMO what have you got to lose by having another one (other than a bit of dignity but that'll all be gone after labour anyway)?

no experiance on 2 sweeps but i would think it would be better to have another not sweep related but what helped me in my last pregnancy was bouncing on my ball for half an hour a few times a day it worked

I had a total of three prior to being induced..I think that says it all for my experience! Everyone is different though, some people swear by it really starting things off for them.

I would leave it, personally.

You're only just over your due date - why are they so eager to get you going?

The morning after my first sweep (thur) I have a bit of blood but nothing else. Sweep no2 (min) resulted in blood, some cramping straight away and contractions about 12 hours later. DD was born on the tue and I was due to be induced on the wed.
Whatever you decide, good luck!

I've had my third today at 11 days over, no sign of movement yet Sad I think it really depends on your body and how close you are to labour anyway, I think a sweep has got to be better than induction which is what I'm facing monday. The one major bug bear I've got is that I had a different midwife to conduct the sweep each time, that means I've had three totally different opinions on cervical position, effacement etc, my chances of a natural labour have got worse with each sweep not better!

Flowers ispentitwithyou I've spent a lot of this afternoon in tears so I really appreciate you saying that. I hope I'm in a better frame of mind tomorrow because I cant spend the whole weekend like this!

My second sweep had me in labour within four hours.

rosie, my induction labour was the best out of my 3 labours, by far.

Honestly rosiegal, I used to go faint for my scans, had to have hubby with me for blood tests etc etc, then my induction didn't work for three days! I just kept calm and looked forward to meeting my lovely baby. Because I'm a nervous person i actually really appreciated the extra monitoring and attention you get with an induction. I think sometimes we read too many horror stories. I left hospital the same day I had my daughter and actually look back on that day as one of the best of my life x

I had no signs after my first sweep but gave birth within 48 hours of the second. I think it's quite common to have more than one purely anecdotally from speaking to people I know with babies.

My midwife was a little ambivalent about the utility of them though as she said they only really work when your body is getting ready anyway so she wasn't certain that I wouldn't have given birth in any event... I was desperate to give birth sooner rather than later though as didn't want to waste too much maternity leave.

Hope you have your babies soon...

Like some other posters I had two and they didn't work, but put me into enough discomfort/early labour to be induced a few days later. I'd sit tight and save your energy, and get induced after another week if necessary. Also remember sweeps aren't risk free, they can introduce infection.

p.s. and it hurt.

Yes,I actually preferred the induction process to the 'aggressive' sweep I had....

Update for you....a happy story. My waters went naturally at 8.10am Saturday and my beautiful baby boy arrived at 8.10am Sunday. Absolutely delighted and now to crack breast feeding, I have a feeling and overdue pregnancy will be a walk in the park compared to this Grin Thinking of all you mamas yet to pop xxx

Yes just try not to worry. I was in your situation and got so tired and stressed I didn't have the reserves for labour I should have done. Relax and take it as it comes, as hard as that is. Just think in a week's time by hook or by crook you will be cuddling your lovely little baby - squeee! xx
